I'm just wondering, what have you customized so much that you are expecting an upgrade to protect, but a re-install wont?
Various packages that don't come from SuSE at all, such as Win4Lin or the extra TeX stuff that one gets from the CTAN archives.
Almost everything in /etc will need to be rebuilt by the installation, especially since suse8 has a large reorganisation of the /etc filesystem to make is LSB compliant.
Doing a backup of everything you want to save, followed by a reinstall and restore seems to be a much more obvious solution, seeing as it gives you the additional benefits of using journaled filesystems and so on.
I've already upgraded my filesystems to ext3. That was easy (though ext3 vs. Reiser is another interesting subject). But doing a restore isn't so simple because I wouldn't want to overwrite the reorganized stuff in /etc. Paul
