[SLE] Matrox G400 performance with SuSE 6.3
I've seen that several people have got the Matrox G400 16MB card working with SuSE 6.3. I wonder if they could say: 1 What sort of refresh rates are available (I have a 17" Liyama monitor and 350MHz PII, and normally use 1024x768 at 16 or 24-bit colour) 2 Whether the driver files supplied on the 6.3 CDs actually work (unlike the Rage 128 drivers), i.e. can you just select Matrox G400 in SaX, or have you got to fiddle about downloading and installing other drivers to make it work? Thanks in advance for any information. Yes, even 32-bit color.

SaX works. Also investigate the GLX modules in series [x3d]. Use SaX to generate alternate resolutions (ie. 640x480@16), export a couple of environment variables, and *violla!* Hardware assisted 3D acceleration with XFree86 3.3.5. I really need one of those cards... -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | Kansas City, MO /\\ 816-241-2641 x107 | http://www.atipa.com _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

you'd better download the latest version of GLX, I had problems getting Q3 running with the one in the SuSE 6.3 distrib. marc. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I'm running 1600x1200 at 16bpp and 84 Hz on my Iiyama 19". BTW, avoid 24 bit under X because it noticably slows down the server and use 32 bit instead. Both use 32 bit values, but for 24 bit X has to do extra work to mask of the unneeded bits.

Matrox works out of the box, as I can certify ;-) And as a nice side effect you also get a nice accelerated framebuffer console if you want, great for using fbtv at 768x576 100 Hz fullscreen for watching TV on the console (can't do it under X, because the machine locks up rather fast. Reason is a known problem with the VIA MVP3 chipset). And in contrast to vesafb, matroxfb can be configured via fbset at runtime, making it possible to run consoles with different resolutions (my normal console is 1280x1024, the one for TV at 758x576). And, as I might add, the matrox driver is one of the best that XFree86 offers. Just wondering: Has anyone got VMware to work with this card? On Fri, 18 Feb 2000, Philipp Thomas wrote:
