I used
'xv -root /location/image.gif' to do this by hand, but I cant seem to make the FvwmBacker work for me. I copied and pasted the sample script right out of the man page, removed the line with the image, and saved the file as .fvwm2rc. When I restarted my windows manager, I lost my tool bar and the ability to move my windows around, as well as some other functionality.
You've got it right, but you need to add -quit as an option to xv so that is puts the image up and returns control to the window manager. Also, you may need to append an '&' to the end of the line.
The string would look something like this:
Exec "I" exec xv -root -quit /patjh to image/image.jpg
Hope this helps.

Mark, Thanks for the help. I am still not getting what I expect. What is meant by an "FvwmBackerDesk 1" ? I notice that there are seven such "Desks". I originally thought that each of the six rectangles displayed in the left upper corner of the xvfm desktop represented a "Desk". The following sets all of what I think are Desks to steelblue: *FvwmBackerDesk 0 -solid steelblue # *FvwmBackerDesk 1 Exec xv -root -quit /temp/collage.gif *FvwmBackerDesk 1 -solid midnightblue *FvwmBackerDesk 2 -solid yellow *FvwmBackerDesk 3 -solid cadetblue2 *FvwmBackerDesk 5 -solid cadetblue3 *FvwmBackerDesk 6 -solid cadetblue4 Am I not understanding correctly what a desk is?
