[opensuse] Thunderbird stopped downloading from IMAP server
Since sometime this morning, Thunderbird has stopped loading new messages from my ISP's IMAP server. This is happening on both my laptop and my desktop, both of which are running Tbird 17.0.8 on openSUSE 12.3, with KDE 4.10.5 When I right click the account name and click on Subscribe, the folder list is empty. The Inbox on my desktop incarnation is completely empty, other folders show mails up until yesterday, but nothing for today. Thunderbird running in Windows 7, which I'm using to post this message, is working as expected, which means the problem is with my linux Thunderbird installations. I've tried reverting to earlier versions in case an upgrade this morning introduced a bug, but without success. I don't remember changing anything, just noticing the odd behaviour. Claws mail in linux also downloads the latest mail OK. Is their a configuration file I could safely delete, forcing TB to regenerate it when it starts up? I've tried deleting the global-messages-db.sqlite file, which got rebuilt, but it didn't solve the problem. Move .thunderbird to a different name and see if a new config fixes the problem. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Good suggestion. It seemed to work initially, in that the Inbox repopulated itself, as well as several other folders, but not all of them. The empty ones had nothing in the message list pane. I thought it was simply a lack of filters, so I copied over my original msgFilterRules.dat and re-opened Thunderbird, but the filters failed with the message "Applying filter: XYZ failed. Would you like to continue applying filters?" I'm also still unable to see the list of subscribed folders. Right clicking on the Account and choosing 'Subscribe' shows an empty list. Clicking 'Refresh' does nothing - well, a message flashes past at the bottom of the dialog, but too fast to read. I shall try again, this time without adding in my old filters. -- Bob Williams System: Linux 3.7.10-1.16-desktop Distro: openSUSE 12.3 (x86_64) with KDE Development Platform: 4.10.5 "release 4" Uptime: 06:00am up 22:11, 3 users, load average: 0.08, 0.08, 0.12 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Unlike the Daily, which I run (currently v 26.0a1), the version you have hasn't changed for zonks so any changes in its behaviour are caused by something in your system. As I said, I run the Daily version and a couple of nights ago it suddenly went "beresk" sending back at me every couple of minutes copies of messages I had just sent to various lists. I traced the problem to the Settings (Server) where an update done a few ago (at that time, that is) some altered the setting and told my ISP server to hold all the mail until I deleted it. So, check your Settings to see if all are as they should be. The other thing, execute 'thunderbird %u' form a command line in a terminal and this will show any error messages which you just said you saw but they disappeared too quickly for you to see them. You are quite correct in claiming that the cause of the problem is local. After several restarts with new configurations, I eventually narrowed it down to an experiment with SSL, in which I had created my own certificate according to an article by Klaus Knopper in Linux Magazine. Evidently, my ISP did not like my 'roll your own' certificate. I have therefore removed it, especially as it is probably useless in offering me protection from the NSA or GCHQ. I'll stick to PGP/GPG in future. On the settings / Server Settings page, click the Advanced button and double check that everything in there is as you expect. Most Imap servers do not have a directory below your account where your mail is, but a few do. In that case you might be expected to have something in "IMAP Server Directory". Most often you can leave that blank or have a single forward slash. Make sure "Show Only Subscribed" folders is off, Sub folders is on and IDLE is on. Also note that Tbird sets a high number of Server Connections by default, but many Imap providers are starting to limit this due to everybody having 3 or 6 devices all watching the same accounts keeping a bazillion connections open, and their Imap software struggling to maintain all the idled sockets for notification. 1 or 2 is all you need. Even Google has had to limit the total number of connections. -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

[snipped good advice]
Please see my reply to Basil. Apologies for creating so much noise with my self-inflicted problem, and thank you all for your helpful suggestions.
