[opensuse] More about ati drivers
Hi, I've been reading all these compiz, ati and XGL messages, but results are not so good as expected. I've recently installed new ati 8.42.3 driver. It works, but some odd things happened. My ati card is a Radeon X300 Series. Kernel 2.6.23.1. When I try to open ATI Catalyst Control Center, it says that ati driver is not installed, or not well configured. I've done every explanation in http://dev.compiz-fusion.org/~cyberorg/2007/10/24/ati-8433-on-opensuse-the-h... but I'm not satisfied with the results. I've deleted compiz-icon, because it completely freezed X (windows refresh was about several minutes). So, my question is: what is left in order to get a right XGL? Am I doing something wrong? Is 8.41 driver better than this new one? Is it necessary to have installed and execute compiz-fusion icon? As you see, they are so many questions, so I've decided to write, because I'm in a real mess. Thanks a lot in advance, AOP. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You would need 10.3 stock kernel 2.6.22.

You need 8.40 drivers as mentioned on the blog and activate xgl. Remove ati repo and then use ati-legacy.ymp. Cheers -J -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

After yast, my kernel is 2.6.22.9. Is this right or it must be the shipped kernel with suse 10.3?

I've got 8.40 now, but it's apparently the same. I 've never got a good XGL Desktop. It appears a "different" desktop, with shadows around windows, cairo clock I use is not rounded with the black square if not 3D activated... but only that. Beryl or Aquamarine is imposible to work... or Beryl is not possible to run with ati propietary driver?? As you see, the mess I have is really great! I admit! There's no way at all. Have I to change my ATI card for another new one? Bye and thanks again. AOP.
Cheers

That's what you want. [root Rankin-P35a/home/david] # uname -r 2.6.22.9-0.4-default I cannot get catalyst control center to work either. If I run /usr/bin/amdcccle, I get the following: [root Rankin-P35a/home/david] # /usr/bin/amdcccle amdcccle: xcb_xlib.c:52: xcb_xlib_unlock: Assertion `c->xlib.lock' failed. Aborted This is evidently a java error that is the result of the latest java for SuSE being screwed up. According to the bug report, this is supposed to fix it: export LIBXCB_ALLOW_SLOPPY_LOCK=true But is does NOT. [root Rankin-P35a/home/david] # /usr/bin/amdcccle Now it locks up. (ctrl+c to kill the process) None of this is rocket-science. Why java got screwed up and can't be fixed defies logic. Why the simple ATI control center, that worked fine in 10.2, is now borked in 10.3 also strains the imagination, but this is what Novell gave us in 10.3. If either java or amdcccle had adequate documentation that gave you a good look at what is going on behind the scene, then I'm convinced the folks on this list would have solved the problem in 0.5 seconds. All that being so, I have been successful in getting compiz to work. It is a phenomenal work of art. On my system, the radeon driver are located here: [root Rankin-P35a/home/david] # modprobe -l | grep radeon /lib/modules/2.6.22.9-0.4-default/kernel/drivers/char/drm/radeon.ko /lib/modules/2.6.22.9-0.4-default/kernel/drivers/video/aty/radeonfb.ko I still don't know whether I need them or not, but everything seems to be working. Check your system to see if they are present and check with modprobe to see if they are loaded. Good luck. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E.
