[bit OT] NVIDIA fan problem
Hi all, As some on the list know already [because I asked them], that I have an Nvidia Riva TNT2 M64 card. I noticed today that the fan on the card is not working. It is also true that I am not using 3D [In Linux, the card is not configured for 3D, and in Windows, the PCI soundcard plus this TNT card hang the machine if I try to use multimedia, due to IRQ conflict that windows would not permit me to resolve :-(]. Does the fan turn on on-demand only? Or should I take a good look immediately? -- Rohit +9122 5692 2101 G9,Floor-1,Chandivali : SDE : TLSI : 9821394599@bplmobile.com The information below is compulsorily added for non-mahindrabt recepients. ********************************************************* Disclaimer This message (including any attachments) contains confidential information intended for a specific individual and purpose, and is protected by law. Have you tried NVidia's site to either download a manual or view the specs for that card? Patrick -- --- KMail v1.5.9.1i --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...

Yes. I tried all the help from them but realised that they did not specify about the fan. I finally took my card out and looked at it. The fan was HOT after a night's uptime on my machine. Thank God the chip has not blown yet. Tried rotating the fan manually, it was really hard to do it. I am sure a motor could not have moved the fan by itself. Surprisingly the motor is on even now. Just that it fails to move the fan. I am looking for a replacement. I think that I have been lucky so far, not having pushed that card too much without the fan. Thanks for the inputs, all. I had the same thing happen. The %$#$% fan died and I didn't know it until the display developed a visible problem. I installed a 5.25" fan that blows on the card, but of course it cannot reverse the stroke the card already had. As a precaution, I also installed a 5.25" fan blowing on another NVidia card -- I don't trust the factory POS fans. If your card still works and you want to replace it, email me. Since I've already got a 5.25" fan installed, an otherwise functional card with a dead fan is not a problem. -rex

IMHO you need to take a look and see why the fan is not working. Some cards do not have fans on them but I think that this is not a good idea. It seems that you are not asking the card to do anything computationally intensive so you might be OK for now. But since the card came with a fan, I would look to see why it failed. Some chips need them to keep cool. -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, we just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."
