Re: [opensuse] 10.2 install problems. Lost 1 cpu
----- Original Message -----
About a dozen lines or so after starting the install, I encountered the line "Starting udev ..." and the installation hung. (Reported as bug 229217 and unresolved. The status is 'Needinfo', but there is no way to get a log file.) This occurs with both the DVD and CD1.
I had read that disabling ACPI was a workaround. Yes, but: during the installation menu/setup screens, the installer searches for all hardware, but does NOT find any hard disks. I had seen messages about problems with the sata-promise driver, but that is not relevant. The driver turns out to be sata-nv (GeForce 6150LE/nForce 430/MCP51).
I had read that setting 'maxcpus=0' might be a workaround. OK. I was able to install SuSE 10.2. I'm still working of configuring it the way I want. (It would be much easier if the import/export feature of SuSE 10.0 was still available in the Software Manager. There is a long-standing 'critical' bug report, with no progress.)
I was about to post about this very problem. I have a Compaq proliant 6400R and found through this bug report that I could complete my install. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204147 Unfortunately, no further updates have been made and this bug still appears to exist in the production release.
My problem is that I now appear to have only 1 cpu available. xosview shows only one, and the hardward list has only 1 entry, and 'top' identifies only 1 cpu. If the 'maxcpus=0' boot option is removed, the computer will not boot. It appears to me that the SMP features of the kernel are all set in the active configuration list.
How can I get my second cpu back? Thank you in advance.
I have found the exact same situation. This is a quad cpu box (PIII) and I would sure like to get all four working again. Note: I'm using the i386 install and I've got a compaq RAID controller instead of SATA. Note2: A lot of these bugs are getting marked as a duplicate of 202079 because the install hangs at the same location, when in fact the symptoms are quite different. This one is specifically related to SMP. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I checked out the suggestions. maxcpus=1/2 does not help, either with the installation nor in trying to get my processor back after the install. My bios setup is rather limited, and does not have any options for RAID. One possible clue: if I use a i386 installation DVD, instead of the x86_64 one, the problems about "Starting udev..." and needing "maxcpus=0" do not appear. The installation starts up smoothly. The kernel messages do not appear, to me, to show anything unusual or troublesome. All devices, including 2 cpu processors, are detected. I aborted prior to setting up the partitions because I want to retain the 64-bit rpms for the moment. I also tried to switch the DVD from i386 to x86_64 when the language screen came up. However, a couple of screens later, when the catalogs were being established, I got a request to insert CD1 -- so no dice. I did not have any of these problems when I installed SuSE 10.1. Something has gone bad with 10.2, at least (for me) with the x86_64 install. A couple of bugzillas have been submitted. Although listed as 'critical,' they should be labeled as 'blockers' because even the workarounds will not provide a properly functional installation. New mastering and isos will be needed. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
