I have posted to this list many times my problems with NVIDIA drivers on my SuSE Pro 9.1 system. The issue is the GUI / Splash / X Window system never comes up. I have installed the latest 7167 drivers, made a few changes to the XFree86 config files (mostly to do with keyboard settings). All to no avail. I would most like to thank Jeffrey Laramie for his help but there have been many others. Ok .. on to the question. I am looking at solutions. Here are some option / questions. What does the list think I should try and in what order??? Upgrade to 9.3. Since I don't think this does anything to either the NVIDIA drivers or the XFree86 config files I doubt this would be much of a solution. Comments? Look for another, supported X Window software system, even if it not free. Back in my Red Hat days I used to use Accelerated X with good result. Are there any commercial X Window alternatives for SuSE? The idea here is for the $$ I would get tech support. Replace the graphics card on the tower. Scary as I hate hardware solutions and picking on that I know would work out of the box with XFree86 is something im clueless on. Comments?? I will take all comments and suggestions on here. If anyone wants to take a stab at the problem i can upload and config / log files needed. I am at the end of my rope on these. Peace and thanks. john

John, I have not seen the previous posts on this subject, so maybe this is redundant ..... but anyway : Over time I have experienced that some NVIDIA driver versions do not always work correctly in all system environments. Maybe that is also the case with the 7167 version. As said, I had similar problems (with some older versions) but have a stable installation with 6629 (I did not upgrade after that). I suggest that you also try an older version (such as 6629) and if that doesn't work try another stable one, being 5328. Hope this helps. I do have both of these. Is it possible to back install by running the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run shell script and then sax2?? I have only used this to upgrade to newer forms of the drivers .. will it work backwards? Thanks for your continued help .. List im still looking for other options, if this works i will post it. john

The script first uninstalls the existing driver (whatever it is) and then install the one you are installing. BTW ; the only changes I made in /etc/X11/XF86Config section Device were : replace Driver “nv” by Driver “nvidia” add Option ”NvAGP” “0” Good luck, -- Jan Elders

To uninstall the nVidia driver you must do "init 3" when logged on as root (ALT-CTRL-F2) then issue the command nvidia-installer --uninstall and this will remove the driver. And unless you immediately install a new driver then don't forget to reset in the XF86Config section the driver from "nvidia" back to "nv" otherwise .... :-) . John. If all else fails you could upgrade to 9.2 SuSE changed the X sytem in that upgrade. Might help, might not. Bob S.

Hey John, Which NVidia card are you using? I would also like to take a look at your X logs, If possible? JD
