[opensuse] Yast ncurses Software Management in 11.0 - Why no keyboard shortcuts anymore?
Listmates, Text mode yast in 11.0 is missing all of the shortcut keys for search, etc... I thought it must have been an oversight and would be fixed, but after 4 months, they are still not there. Specifically if you go into software management, you can select Alt+F for "Filter", but then all of the shortcut keys are missing for "Patterns", "Languages", "RPM Groups", "Repositories", "Search" (most importantly), and "Installation Summary". Is this a bug or did somebody mean to strip the shortcuts out? Also, the "search" layout is more cumbersome now. Once you select search, you then have to use Alt+P to get to the search phrase text box and then after you enter the search, you have to type Alt+S to actually start the search, the normal return key does nothing. In 10.3, the focus went to the search box automatically, and then a simple return executed the search. Again, is this a bug or this this new (lack of) functionality? Thanks -- David C. Did you by any chance mean ALT-L rather then ALT-F? Alt-F works but there is nah-dah for Alt-L. (Because I always use the mouse to navigate in Software Management I hadn't noticed the absence of the keyboard shortcuts until you mentioned this fact.) Interesting. I had cause to boot single user mode and run yast recently, and found I had to tab round all the commands because I could not make some of them work from the highlit letters. I thought it was this machine, so I didn't report it. Bob -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Good, I know now that I'm not the only one. I'll report it. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. Simply Amazing.... <quote> --- Comment #1 from Katarina Machalkova <kmachalkova@novell.com> 2008-10-29 05:29:03 MDT --- All of the above (kbd shortcuts - unique across all dialogs, accessibility of search function etc.) are no longer an issue in openSUSE 11.1 yast-ncurses-pkg 2.17.4 should contain all the fixes. See also this blogpost of mine: http://hedgehogpainter.livejournal.com/670.html Unfortunately, it was too late to fix for 11.0 and usability issues usually do not qualify for online update. Moreover, in this particular case adding keyboard shortcuts would break existing translations. </quote> That's one fine customer focused corporate philosophy: "usability issues usually do not qualify for online update" I mean how hard could it be to put kbd shortcuts back in? I'll know after I finish getting smart on YUI;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. If you will look back, you will find that it has been this way! IOW, "Not a new policy."

If it is that "easy", you are/will provide the function? -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The blogspot link listed in the post explains a little more about the current situation. Even the developers aren't too happy about the current state of the 11.0 ncurses UI. Two questions linger. (1) How or why did it ever get released in the shape it is in anyway?, and (2) since this has obviously been a known issue for quite some time and already fixed for 11.1, why wasn't a fix developed and deployed for 11.0 at the same time? As long as I can remember, at least back to 8.0, the ncurses shortcut keys have always been present and always worked. How does something like that just disappear? Why dwell on the past? There have been a number of yast/zypper updates for 11.0, one as recent as last week. If another is needed, why not have this fix ready to deploy at that time? I get it -- the 11.0 ncurses interface is awkward to use in its current state, but beyond that, it is usable. (with lots of arrow keys and lots of tabs) Ok, that's the decision on the bug -- that's fine. However, the intriguing part about the bug to me was the manner in which the bug was closed -- "RESOLVED". Huh? Really? That's what "RESOLVED" means? To avoid a little bit of intellectual dishonesty, wouldn't "WONTFIX" have been the more appropriate designation for 11.0? Let's see: (a) Problem Reported for 11.0 -- check (b) Problem Validated for 11.0 -- check (c) Solutions Considered -- check (d) Decision made to NOT FIX -- check I understand why Novell wants to focus on 11.1 right now, but why forget all of those users who have installed, or more importantly those who _will_ install, 11.0 in the future. 11.0 is still the "current" release isn't it? It will still be supported for another 18 months or so, right? If the install/configuration tool is one of the main yardsticks by which Linux distributions are measured as you read in nearly every press review, why not make sure the you put your best foot forward? Just seems like a missed opportunity to me. Anyway, this issue is closed. If I can learn enough about YUI with the great start Stefan was kind enough to provide, I'll be happy to submit a patch, that is of course, unless you beat me to it... -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. The part about translations is absolutely true. Translations are done by volunteers, and when you change even a single comma in the original English text, all translations of that string cease to work reverting to English. Thus, by adding the shortcuts, which would replace labels like: Accept with: &Accept would automatically dissable its translation to all languages (by design, and not suse's). It is not as simple as you think. On the other hand, updates are only done for security or grave reasons, and a usability issue is not that. You can only request those changes for 11.1, if there is time, not for 11.0. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
