[SuSE Linux] Re: [Suse Linux] ZDNN: Lunix bandwagon gains Compaque
Fred: I understand your frustration with one of the best Linux distro's out there. Fact is unless there is consumer pressure ( ie: from SuSE users) it aint gonna happen. My observation is SuSE is simply not committed enough to the NA market and focussing on Europe ( approx 60% market share but dropping) to deal with building RedHat pressure and potential loss of market share in the Mother Land. If Im correct, (presupposition only, as SuSE has had in office in NA for about 1.5 yrs?) SuSE will continue to slide in NA (they only have about 2% market share currently). While I think the guys at SuSE NA are doing a great job, god bless them, they are probably restrained or directed by there overlords in Europe, as satelite offices are typically funded/directed by the main office. No funding no marketing. Unless there is a concerted effort by SuSE users, I dont think IMHO that SuSE's marketing program will improve in NA and get the attention they deserve: ie: funding and marlet share. The only way I know to get around this problem is to demonstrate to the overlords the value and potential of the NA market and get their heads in the right space....Redhat has done this the best and is a case study in moving linux front and center. When you say ketchup...you say Heinz...when you say Linux you almost want to say RedHat...and the corporations who are considering linux love this type of marketing. Bob Young and crew have done and excellent job in this respect and have done linux (users, corps etc.) a commendable service. Wish I could say the same for the rulers at Suse. IMHO opinion we neeed a strong number two contender for general and commercial usage, this could be SuSE's role predicated some commitment and investment as Caldera is well Caldera, Debian is great and is needed to balance the field (some one always needs to produce high end very sophisticated products) but will probably not catch on in the corp world due to variouse issues which I all disagree with ( to long to explain), so this leaves SuSE as the number two contender. The role is their's if they want it, but there does not seem to be the resources ( based on the quality and nature of marketing and promotion programs over the past year) to tackle the job., Prove me wrong SuSE guys....you listening out there???? WE need and want a strong number two player!!! Anyone up for putting a little pressure on these guys to have our favorite distro enhanced in NA??? chris herrnberger "Fred A. Miller" wrote:
I've said this before, but will again! The #1 problem SuSE has is it's marketing personel are inapt or non-existant!!!! Once again, SuSE is eclipsed by R.H., and it SHOULD be the other way around......period!
