Hi: I have 7.0 installed on a few systems and the CDs for 7.1 here ready to upgrade. Last time I tried an upgrade, the results were pretty dismal. I tried going from 6.2 to 6.4 or 6.2 to 7.0 or something like that, basically skipping a version or two. I wound up installing 7.0 from scratch and reinstalling software. Is the upgrade from 7.0 to 7.1 smooth or will things break? It seems that a new kernel is a big unneeded risk for my desktop usage. Can 7.1 be installed with the 2.2.16 kernel? Thanks for pointers. -- _____________________ Christopher R. Carlen crcarl@inreach.com Linux 2.2.10
Yes things will break. The install renamed the configuration file for
Apache, and several other servers, replacing them with a stock file.
I had VMware 2.0 installed from a tarball. It overwrote it and I
ended up in a situation where rpm refused to install it or uninstall
it. If there is a rpm for a package, use it. 7.1 comes with 2.2.18
kernel as the default, but installs both 2.2.18 and 2.4 sources. The
2.4 sources are the selected ones, go figure. I am still trying to
get everything to come up properly after a reboot. Plan on several
days straightening out the configuration.
Now for the good new. USB works much better. With 7.0, I had to load
the modules by hand for my USB joystick. With 7.1, it is recognized
at boot time.
