[opensuse] Early start of 10.3 torrent
I all the time get torrent files that have no seeds or peers available. The torrent program waits patiently until a seed joins and then starts to download. I wondered if opensuse could make the 10.3 torrent file available today, we could start it, and nothing would happen until their seeds join the torrent. If that works I could just start it and go to bed. Hopefully when I woke up tomorrow the torrent would be in process. In the past I have had difficulty downloading the torrent file on release day because all the servers are busy. I think that is partly the point. The torrent file can be released any time, even before the actual content is accessible. Clients will wait until the seed(s) with the real content eventually appear. When that happens, all those clients will make the torrent live up to its name. Unless there is some technical reason, I like the idea. Maybe it is too late for 10.3, as it is on the way out the door. But for a future release (apparently not to be called 10.4). -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Kapellgränd 7 P.O. Currently 21:32 cet, i see 9 peers at 100% (and about 200 trying to dowload some chunks) Three Polish universities are seeding at quite a hige pace, faster than the suse-site.. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

btw, what is the preferred ktorrent configuration? If i keep "upload slots" minimal, a limited number get quite some bandwith. otoh, if i raise it to 50, more people get a slower data stream.. hw -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

At monday 1 st, on a bad configured mirror ;-). Then the hole was fixed. I got the info in this list. I was told that today some 'holes' was opened, but I can't tell you where. I tried to find out without success. A friend of mine got the torrent and now 10.3 is installed. From my part, I'm just now seeding the torrents but using a narrow bandwidth. Regards, Guillermo

I loaded the Torrents into KTorrent early in the morning (German time) on the 4th. They started out slow, but within an hour were downloading at the max my ADSL2 connection could handle.. in excess of 1500kbps combined. I have been seeding (not as fast of course) ever since. Torrent speeds are tied to a few things. First... are you using the original KTorrent build from the 10.2 DVD? If so, update it to the latest PM build. It is many many times faster. Also, have you configured your firewall and/router for Torrents? A few ports need to be forwarded to make it work "better". And.... does you ISP do traffic shaping on Torrent data? This can really kill your download speeds with Torrents. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

They are documented on your bittorrent client program. Depends on which you use. /usr/doc/packages/BitTorrent/README.txt: BitTorrent defaults to port 6881. If it can't use 6881, (probably because another download is happening) it tries 6882, then 6883, etc. It gives up after 6889.
