pop/fetchmail problem -LONG
hey mail gurus ;) a while back, probably a year ago at least, i set up my linux box to pull all of our office email off our dial-up pop server and then act as a mail server for our small office network of mostly W$ boxes. i use fetchmail to get the messages from the pop server. this has worked fine for a long time, and for some reason, (which i want to blame on the W$ boxes), we have lost several large messages today. i ran fetchmail in the morning as always and saw a rather large attachment get downloaded for my sales dept. along with several small emails. when they tried to get thier emails thier client (netscape mesenger) said no mail........so i loged into my linux box under thier account and ran pine locally, no mail found, then i looked at thier file in /var/mail and there was no mail there either, so i looked at the /var/log/messages and /var/log/warn files maybe a clue there. /var/log/warn has this: Oct 1 16:07:44 ss20 sendmail[7449]: f91Jo1I07446: SYSERR(root): timeout writing message to mail.funport.com Oct 2 08:05:16 ss20 sendmail[9060]: f91Jo1I07446: SYSERR(root): timeout writing message to mail.funport.com I also noticed very heavy outbound ppp traffic on gkrellm after getting the mail, there was no reason for this as i wasn't using the web browser at the time and ther was no mail qued to go out, so i just killed the ppp conection. logs aren't showing any other ip address than the pop server. fetchmail is deleting mail from the server after downloading so i can't retrieve a copy from the dial-up pop server. any thoughts? ideas? i can't find any new mail on the W$ box, ethernet connection is fine. don
