SV: [SLE] Java Development on SuSE 7.0
Well, I must say I don't recognize your description of JBuilder at all. I've tried several different Java IDEs and for the moment, JBuilder holds the first place. The "Foundation" edition is free of charge nowadays, but you must still register to get a key. But the "Professional" and "Enterprise" edition are priced way out of the reach of most private citizens, they are about 1000USD/2000USD respectively. Of course requirements varies at lot. If you want something cheap, I believe JBuilder Foundation and Sun Forte are the best contenders. IBM Visual Age has a GUI paradigm I personally find strange, but it is the ONLY Java IDE I know which has can incremental compiler integrated with debugger - you can change code on-the-fly in the middle of a debugging session. I especially don't recognize your describing JBuilder as "taking over". What do you mean? For me, JBuilder is just an icon on the desktop, free to click or not, with a comparatively small RAM footprint when running, too. /Lennart -----Ursprungligt meddelande----- Från: napi5 [mailto:napi5@optonline.net] Skickat: den 31 januari 2001 02:33 Till: suse-linux-e@suse.com Ämne: RE: [SLE] Java Development on SuSE 7.0 Well, Perhaps, I missed out on something with borland but, I found my experience with their product to be one of the worst I've ever had in life. It sold for close to $90 (more than my last 5 linux systems) I could not even use the product until I filled out a questionnaire on-line (which included ALL my personal information) and then registered the product; at which point, I received my "activation key" (those word sound familiar?) for the product. The product really took over my system. And in the end I was unable to get a simple applet to work using awt components with a gridbag layout because of the code it kept placing in my source files. Had lots of trouble removing it as well. I don't consider myself programmer of the century but I thought I wasn't asking to much of the product. All in all it was a extremely bad experience. Dare I say much worse than any MS product I've had to deal with in the past. I'm very disappointed in Borland at the moment. They have surpassed MS in the commercial game in my opinion. If I have given the product a hasty judgment please let me know.
