Try setting "debug" in /etc/ppp/options and see what is logged by pppd in /var/log/messages.
That also doesn't seem to work in user-mode! Before I emtied the ppp/options file, I had uncommented the debug line. However, whenever pppd dies, kppp tells me that debugging is not enabled, and offers to enable it for me. I never get any debugging output though. Again, this is something that works fine when I log on as root. Olly
