Hello! I'm a newbie to Linux, and I've discovered that my box has a winmodem in it. I want to swap it out with a decent fax modem that will work with Linux as well as Windows. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what type or brand to buy? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! Hi Lynda, I would recommend just about any external modem. I bought a Best Data 56K external for approx. $70 including shipping. http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html has a full list of Linux compatible modems, including quite a few internal modems. I think best modem is US Robotics. I have never had problems with it.
