Annoying chimes when system is booting

I asked this question a couple of weeks ago, but didn't get a reply that helped. When the computer is booting suse, when system services such as usb, keymap etc. are starting -- I get approximately 5-8 chimes from my computer speaker. This is well before either X or KDE starts - so that is not the answer. How can I turn this off - short of disconnecting the speaker? -- Marianne Taylor

I get the same and have been trying to track via the scripts via /etc/rc.d/ currently to no avail (but then I have not put much time into it), I might try going into single user mode to see, erm hear the difference. I know SuSE 7.1 < did not do this. By going into single this should narrow down the service that is causing this.... Or someone from SuSE can say directly which one has the issue :-). Matt

Could this be : Yast -> System Administration -> Change configuration file -> HALT_SOUND. ? -- TRBishop tb64710@alltel.net SuSE 7.2 Pro

No, tried that. Seemed like the answer at the time. On Monday 30 July 2001 04:36, Thomas Bishop wrote:

Got it! /etc/usbmgr/usbmgr.conf Not tested yet, but when opened you will find the contents: ### BEEP # beep off # beep on Knew it had to be something small and annoying. Not tested it yet though, but I am fairly sure its that. Matt

Do you have USB services enabled and do you have USB devices plugged? I noticed that there are beeps when my workstation boots while initializing USB stuff and more beeps when my Joystick is plugged. This seems to be a feature. Anyway, I dunno how to turn these beeps off.
