Much more likely to be a broken X configuration. -- 3:20pm up 51 days, 23:26, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.03, 0.00

No, the system is trying to start the X Server, and it cannot initialize. Since the system is set to respawn the X server automagically upon death, it's going like this: Boot Up System Spawn X Server --X Server Dies a Horrible Death-- Spawn X Server --X Server Dies a Horrible Death-- Spawn X Server --X Server Dies a Horrible Death-- Spawn X Server --X Server Dies a Horrible Death-- Spawn X Server --X Server Dies a Horrible Death-- Spawn X Server System gives up trying to start the X Server. So check your X configuration -- make sure that you can start X with the "startx" command at the shell prompt. Once you get that working, then try the GUI login. Just as an aside, you might want to rethink running X on your gateway.. if this is just a server machine, X is just sitting there wasting resources that could otherwise be put to better use. Good luck, Steven

Hi I had this once, and I did cure it by installing the package that has "init". So to my mind this points to init-setup problems. Jaska. Viestissä Perjantai 01 Helmikuu 2002 17:26, Raúl Gutiérrez Segalés kirjoitti:
