Hi, I'm unable to install SuSE 8 on my system that contains an nvidia mx400 card. The software seems to be installed, then the system does a reboot. During the reboot, the system reports that it's running the 3ddiag script and the screen goes black and then nothing. I've tried to run sax2 while the system is hung up and I've also downloaded the new nvidia drivers using yast (and installed them and rebooted) - all to no avail. Is there any hope for getting 8.0 on my system? I assume during the initial install that SuSE uses the xfree drivers for my card, so those must be failing, too. I've tried to upgrade from 7.3 to 8.0, but SuSE 8 can't seem to deal with my SuSE 7.3 partitions (not sure why, I used SuSE 7.3 to partition the disk). I've also tried a text based install, but that fails at the same point. I'm considering replacing the nvidia card since it's basically been a pain in the *ss since I got it. Any suggestions on a replacement (not nvidia)? Note: SuSE 7.3 runs fine on this machine and SuSE 8.0 runs fine on my two laptops (w/o nvidia cards). Also, Mandrake 8.2 and RedHat 7.3 have similar problems with my nvidia system. I haven't tried Debian yet. Thanks for any help, Steve

Hmm, I too wonder whether NVidia, for all its supposed wonderfulness, is actually worth the hassle. Certainly, several people here get the drivers to work with no problem, but I tried several runs before I got mine installed (I think). Try the following. 1. Know where you have your nvidia drivers located :-) eg NVIDIA_GLX-1.0.2960.suse80.i386.rpm and NVIDIA_kernel-1.0.2960.suse80.i386.rpm 2. Reboot your PC, and at the boot menu, add 3 after the "linux" on the bottom line. 3. Login as root and change to the driver location. 4. Run rpm -Uvh on both rpms. 5. Run sax2, and answer yes to the question about 3D. After stuttering a bit, you should get an NVidia logo, and then a blue background on the screen, and the Sax2 app. 6. Select Properties and go through the screens. 7. Logout as root, and login as your normal user. 8. Run startx. If all is well, you should have a running server. However, if it doesn't work, I don't think I can help you much more! I had absolutely no luck with NVidia running Sax2 from inside KDE. It runs alright, but then it does funky things, including lockups, to your screen. Moroever, if the above does work, you must *not* use Sax2 in KDE to make changes to your setup - it will undo everything and you get lockup heaven again. As regards your partition issues, I did also have a tussle doing a reinstall of 7.3 over 7.2, but trying to use the partitions (eg /usr/local/games) I had set up there. It did eventually work, but there are a few loose ends about, whcih I can live with until I do a complete reinstall of 8.0 once I've tested it more. If it's at all possible to backup your data and recreate all the partitions from scratch in 8.0, that might be the easiest thing to do. Best wishes Kevin

looks like the frambuffer deivce is acting up. add vga=6 to the install prompt (inset boot CD, boot system select the install option and there is a window at the bottom (?? I think, it's been a while) that shows you the boot arguments. stick vga=6 (which gives you a text console w/ 50x80 iso the graphical framebuffer) at the end of the line and hit eneter.

yes. As (for our applications) it's over 20 times faster in 3D visualisation than a sun blade 1000 w/ expert 3D card ;)

Try the following.
My trick is: 0) make sure you have the kernel sources for your running kernel installed 1) download the .tgz files (I stick them in /usr/src/packages/SOURCES) 2) unpack them zcat NVIDIA_GLX-1.0.2960.tgz | tar xvf - zcat NVIDIA_kernel-1.0.2960.tgz | tar xvf - 3) as root: telinit 3 rmmod NVdriver cd /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0.2960 make install cd /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/NVIDIA_kernel-1.0.2960 make install 4) copy the attached XF86Config file to /etc/X11/ 5) edit to your taste (esp. comment out the connected monitor line if yopu have a single head card) 6) run startx

Neither had I, hence the attached XF86Config ;) Currently listening to: rw2002-03-14d1t08 Gerhard, <@jasongeo.com> == The Acoustic Motorbiker == -- __O Remember that two wrongs never make a right, =`\<, But that three do. (=)/(=)

Ah - this is a useful trick. Thanks.

That is certainly hard data. What apps are these?
My trick is: I'm going to try this on another machine, just to see how it goes.
Thanks Kevin
