[SuSE Linux] First Mail from Linux
I don't know how this will look, but I am at least logged on and using KMail. So far, I am unable to retrieve mail but I think I just forgot my correct password. Ha! And not in html either. You are the man Steve! Keep 'em coming. And play with some different mail browsers to see what you like. Many people seem to prefer Mutt because it is very configurable and gives you a lot of control, I have always been a Pine user because that was the first unix mail browser I used on DEC OSF/1. I think I like Tkrat best for X, but mostly I use Netscape mail for the simple reason that regardless what os I am using (I triple boot now and will be quadruple booting in a few weeks when my Solaris x86 shows up) I have the _exact_same_interface_ for mail wherever I go. There is something to be said for consistency. Steve Mills wrote:

Have you guys looked at Postillion? It's a variation of TkRat aimed at the NeXT GUI. I'm thinking about installing it over XFMail and KMail. I *like* the tk interface, I guess. andy - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

It's o.k. I used it with TkStep8.0 to give it that 'steppified' look that goes well with WindowMaker and AfterStep. I normally just use pine at the console, though. There's a part of me that finds having to load X and some bloated app just to read or fetch mail, to be a bit lame. KMail suits me just fine. I thought from browsing the XFMail site that I would want that, but nope. It's really not very well organized and kind of awkward to use. I do, however, wish that KMail (too close to KMart for comfort, don't you think?) had a couple of more switches, like easy signature creation. I can't find that ANYWHERE....and it would be nice if I didn't have to manually check for email while I do other tasks. I love the way KMail looks, though. I was pretty fond of the appearance of Outlook, I just hated it's invasive nature. But.....this feels so GOOD that I really don't care right now. I'm connected and I'm still in Linux. Thanks for the encouragement. It has all been worthwhile. Now if I can learn enough to help the next guy I will be happy. Steve On Sun, 06 Sep 1998, you wrote:

This is from Kmail, by the way. You can create a signature file in Kedit and save it to your /home directory. You can also have it appended automatically if you wish or pull down the Attach button. Install Kbiff and drag its icon onto the Kpanel and it will automatically tell you when you have mail.

Think I have a full install of KDE & stuff. But were do I find Kbiff? It comes up here from command line and under "not yet relesed." I like the mail client, except for the font handling.....NOT good! Once you increse any font beyond 12pt., they get "funky." The news client is "getting there," but it won't do a wild card find for a news group, nor does the decode work for photos. I had hoped these 2 things would have been fixed in 1.0.
