Re: [SLE] smbsh (SAMBA automounter)
Jonathan,
Sometime while I was installing/configure SuSE 6.4 I saw a notice about the changes in samba, but now I can't find it anywhere :-( .
I am on 6.3, which left the following message in root's mailbox at installation :
Attention: The synatax of smbmount has changed! smbmount can not be called anymore. It will be called by a shell >script /sbin/mount/smbfs, which will be called by mount. A sample call to smbfs: mount -t smbfs -o username=uname, password=passwd smbserve/share /destination
The above works for me. I have followed this thread with interest. I am anxious to use smbsh or smbmount to get access to my NT machines from Unix. smbsh is linux only, so here I am with suse 6.4 Had problems with samba 2.0.6 which comes with 6.4, so tried 2.0.7. Tried to compile 2.0.7 source with the --smbwrapper but got wierd C syntax errors which I couldn't sort. So, downloaded the 2.0.7 binaries from Suse. There is no smbsh, but there is smbmount, with which I can mount my NT machines. However as soon as I access the NT mount in anger, the Linux machine crashes. No way out but to cycle the power. The last 2 lines in /var/log/messages before the crash are: Aug 1 14:15:27 poseidon kernel: smb_trans2_request: result=-32, setting invalid Aug 1 14:15:28 poseidon kernel: smb_retry: new pid=6475, generation=2 Has anyone else got such problems or an I just unlucky ? [Before mount, just to test] Have you tested the share with _smbclient_ from your linux box first?? Did you try to download some file/s from your _nt_ box share?? [global] and related share parts of your /etc/smb.conf would be helpfull to diag.

and by specifying the uid and gid you can have it not owned by root: mount -t smbfs -o username=name, password=pass, gid=#,uid=# //smbserver/share \ /dest
The above works for me.
