[opensuse] Bye bye SuSE?
This is not meant to start a flame war, I just thought I should express my concern on this list. "Novell dips KDE 3.5 (...) OpenSuse-Community-Manager (...) said that OpenSuse 11.1 would be the last version with KDE 3.5, and would contain only a stripped down version of the desktop. Strting with openSuSE 11.2 there will be no more KDE 3.5 components in the repositories (...)" - quick and dirty translation of LinuxUser 11.2008 Well, I don't know how far KDE 4.x will be when 11.1 comes out. Judging by 4.1.2 and Sebastian Kügler's interview in the same magazin (more plasmoids and new features and not a single word about bringing back the "old" fonctionalities) it seems I should quickly look for a replacement distribution........ I don't hope to change Novell's decision, but am I the only one here to say "no, KDE 4 has *not* the desktop, file manager and other desktop management elements I want? I very much recommend Kubuntu, though it is .deb based. Fedora is just too unstable for daily work. I haven't seen a roadmap for 11.2 yet, but I would guess it will come out next August or so. ie. You don't have to "quickly" look for a replacement desktop. And who knows, by May or June you may find the KDE 4.x is working for you. Ummm what makes you think that all the other major distributions will not be doing the exact same thing? All distros will be packaging KDE4 as well. This is NOT an openSUSE only thing.... as in openSUSE are not the only ones with KDE4. You are welcome to choose whichever distro suits your needs, but thinking that switching to RandomDistroX will "save" you from KDE4 is very short sighted. RandomDistroX will be shipping with KDE4 too before too long. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Good point. I just picked up the current Linux Pro magazine, and I think it's a Fedora 9 DVD in it this month. I was gonna experiment with installing it in a Hyper-V virtual on my server at work, but it says KDE 4.0, so I've been afraid to touch it. But hey, maybe my v plug-in would work. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, if you read further into it, one might suggest that moving to KDE 3.0 was a bad idea. No you're not. I also want the KDE 3.5 functionality to continue. Based on what I've seen of KDE 4, it's not something I'd ever want on *MY* computers. As far as I'm concerned eye candy == crapware. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

When I upgrade my clients with 11.1, they'll all get 3.5. IF all the functionality in 3.5 isn't in the current KDE release with 11.2 or whatever it is then, then I'll simply convert everyone to Gnome at the time of upgrade. I've already discussed all this with management, and they are in full agreement. Functionality is MANDATORY, eye candy isn't.....period. You win some, you lose some. It's just hilarious that you think converting people from KDE 3 to Gnome is a better and less painful than discovering KDE4's new techniques. I guess it just shows that this is whining and not informed crititcism, appending 1+1=2 to that does not make it valid. Bye, bye! You win some, you lose some. Losing whining people might be a healthy thing for software that looks into the future. If KDE4 does not suit you, don't use it. Calling it crapware disqualifies you. Always refering to only the eye candy shows your ignorance of KDE 4.x. Bye, Bye!
