That's all fine and dandy. However:
1) AFAIK even with 7.0 there is no dump. 2) AFAIK even with 7.0 there is no quota support. 3) AFAIK with 6.4 there is no rescue disk support. 4) Last weekend I had filesystem problems after a reboot. I have my
that they were hardware related but they could be. After not being able to mount reiserfs from the rescue disk, I booted the install. I ran reiserfsck, it got to about 60% and the vm manager killed it. I created a bigger swap partitition and ran reiserfsck again and it completed. I still couldn't boot until I re-installed aaa_base.
Missing dump is no big deal but I had scripts already set up with dump. Quota support is fairly important. The big problem is the weakness of
doubts the
available tools in case you do have a problem.

Hello SuSErs,
What are the pros & cons of using Reiser FS. Anybody have any opinions one way or the other. Is it worth it to use it on just a home desktop PC?
No, I don't think it's there yet. no quotas, no dump, and there are still warnings on the utilities like reiserfsck that they should only be used if you have seriously messed up your filesystem. I had some bizarre problem last weekend and it was a nightmare to fix.

Hi all,
This thread was posted a long time ago, but I now need to find similar solutions. I had a most unpleasant experience last night. After making alterations to try to improve my modem speed (setting ttS1 to sp_vhi), my machine refused to boot into X. startx worked, and so did kdm, but I couldn't return to the graphical login, even though the rc.config option was set to kdm.
So I commented out my changes affecting the modem, and rebooted. Again it refused to boot into X, but this time kdm hung when I started. I had to do a warm reboot as the keyboard was looked. Kernal panic about half way through the reboot...
I also notice root d_count=reached (this from memory, and it flashes past very fast) or something similar - is this the max mount count reached and would that cause the booting into X problem?
mmm...
After that, the machine reset itself to reboot about midway through the booting process. I tried to boot a rescue system, but no joy. I have:
/dev/hda1 ext2 /dev/hda3 reiserfs
mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/
fails under the rescue system, complaining that /dev/hda3 has the wrong major or minor number? I guess this is due to reiserfs?
Can I mount this rieserfs partition using the rescue system off the CD (v.6.4)? If so, how?
What has likely trashed my machine and what should I check to get back my work of the last month? All / any suggestions are welcome, because as far as I could see, /sbin under the rescue system has no reiserfsck on it (dump and resize and utils are there, but not fsck), so if there is a problem (and it looks bad?) what can I do? :-(
