-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Has anyone using SuSE 8.0 and KDE 3.0 got a TV Tuner working? I've installed KwinTV only to find out that the version included with 8.0 doesn't work under KDE 3.0! (SuSE in a rush to get 8.0 out the door?) I tried to get Kwintv for KDE 3, but you have to get it via CVS and I've never done that and so I made it all the way to the last few steps and then the makefile wouldn't make. The instructions on the Kwintv site work fine until here: # Edit the file configure.in.in in the kwintv directory ~ Replace all occurrences of KDE_CHECK_LIB with AC_CHECK_LIB There were no instances of KDE_CHECK_LIB in this file, so at first I changed nothing, then when that didn't work I changed anything that begain with KDE to AC. That doesn't work either. The problem I have is when I do this: # Execute the following commands: ~ make -f Makefile.cvs ~ ./configure ~ cd kwintv ~ make && make install I never make it past the first line. I get the following errors: brian@suse:~/kwintv/kdenonbeta> make -f Makefile.cvs This Makefile is only for the CVS repository This will be deleted before making the distribution /bin/sh: autoconf: command not found *** Creating acinclude.m4 !!! If you get recursion errors from autoconf, it is advisable to set the environment variable M4 to something including "--nesting-limit=500" *** Creating list of subdirectories *** Creating configure.in *** Creating aclocal.m4 make[1]: execvp: aclocal: Permission denied make[1]: *** [cvs] Error 127 make: *** [all] Error 2 I noticed the autoconf file not found thing and so I installed autoconf. That changes almost nothing, I still get the permission denied thing down near the bottom. I've gotten no response from the kwintv author and will sign up for their mailing list if no one here has an idea. But then I also tried motv, which is just xawtv with a better GUI (according to the description) but I wouldn't know because that doesn't run either. Running motv in a shell produces this: This is motv-3.72, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.18-4GB) Warning: Actions not found: Remote Warning: Actions not found: Remote can't open /dev/video0: No such device v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway v4l: open /dev/video0: No such device v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such device no video grabber device available I even tried running v4l-conf manually and it says: v4l-conf: using X11 display :0.0 dga: version 2.0 mode: 1024x768, depth=16, bpp=16, bpl=2048, base=0xf5000000 can't open /dev/video0: No such device Of course, I've looked in /dev and there is such a device and doing ll /dev/video produces: /dev/video -> video0 so the sym link looks ok to me. So, what ideas do folks here have? Has ANYone got a TV Tuner working on SuSE 8.0? How'd you do it?! Motv works fine for me straight out of the box, using a Hauppage card which the SuSE installer auto-detected. :) Mark

Eh? How you got sound working (Happauge)? (without that dull trick with booting to Win then booting to Linux) Mine is still silent.. What pissing me off - i managed to make it work with live CD.. then forgot what i done, installed normal 8.0 - and it silent 8( (video works fine of course) Cheers, Sergei

Sound also works fine out of the box (using SB 1024). The only thing to remember is to crank up the line input channel in your very wonderful mixer of choice, as this is the channel the Haupagge uses to pump sound into the SB, and the default setting is too low to hear anything (or that was the case with me, anyway). :) Mark
Hi; I had the problem of Kwintv not working. The solution, run this command as root chmod 4755 /opt/kde2/bin/kv4lsetup There was an error in the ownership properties of a file. This command should fix it (works for me). Unfortunately you need to run this after every reboot. On Tuesday 21 May 2002 20:53, Brian W. Carver wrote:

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I did the chmod command you suggested and here's what happens now, which as I recall, is the same thing that happened before. suse:/home/brian # /opt/kde2/bin/kwintv Warning: main: Can't load program-file /root/.kwintvrc/default.ch! sh: kv4lsetup: command not found Warning: kwintv: kv4lsetup had some trouble, trying to continue anyway. Also, I was under the impression from reading the kwintv site and reading some things on the kwintv mailing list that the version of kwintv provided with SuSE 8 simply DOES NOT WORK with KDE 3 at all and that only the version available through CVS would work with KDE 3. Are you saying you got kwintv working under SuSE 8 and KDE 3? Darren Harmon wrote: | Hi; | I had the problem of Kwintv not working. SuSE 8.0 (and indeed the version of kde 3 provided for 7.3) has a package kde2-compat. It is intended to allow execution of kde2 applications under kde3. After setting up my Hauppauge card in yast, it worked for me. Your "device not found" sounds like you haven't done that. Either that, or you have one of the newer WinTV cards that aren't supported under linux. regards Anders -- I swear I do declare - how did you get that there?

This is not quite true. You have to run it after every SuSEconfig, or YaST2 change :-( It's is annoying bug, or feature, but it seems to prove that Suse people do not have time to watch TV at work, which is a very good thing :-) --Jyry C:-( C:-/ C========8-O C8-/ C:-(

Either that, or the SuSE people edit the file /etc/permissions.<level> where <level> is easy, secure or paranoid, depending on which setting you're using. It has the lines /opt/kde3/bin/kv4lsetup root.video 2755 /opt/kde2/bin/kv4lsetup root.video 2755 /usr/bin/kv4lsetup root.video 2755 Change them to 4755. regards Anders -- I swear I do declare - how did you get that there?
