One more question and I will leave you all alone for a while ;).
Okay, but this is my last response ;)
In my reading about linux and compiling kernels I saw somewhere that it is best to use modules for anything that is NOT required to boot the system. So I would support stuff like my network card via a module?
The choice is yours, but modular kernel design allows for much more flexibility, enhanced troubleshooting, and (this is important) a smaller core kernel. A (rough) list of my modules: iso9660; For CDs vfat; For /win ide-scsi; For my CD-R, but used on all non-disk IDE devices sg, scsicd; For my Zip ATAPI and CD-R tulip; For my Linksys NIC soundcore, es1371; For my Sound card
But things like ext2 support MUST be compiled directly into the kernel.
This is right. Also, you need built-in support for the device type that / sits on, in my case, IDE. -- -=|JP|=- (Resident GNUbie) Jon Pennington | SuSE Linux 6.2 -o) super-suser@excite.com | Kernel 2.2.10 /\\ Kansas City, Missouri | AMD K6-III 450 _\_V ________________________________________________________________ Get FREE voicemail, fax and email at http://voicemail.excite.com Talk online at http://voicechat.excite.com -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
I am having problems with my Creative Banshee Blaster 3DFX AGP setup in Suse 6.2 I downloaded what should be the correct XSVGA server but I get a lot of flickering on the screen when it has been accepted as the correct one. I did have this card working fine in 6.1 by downloading an alpha version from the internet which had to be symbolicaly linked to the xsvga server. Unfortunatly I can no longer find this server and keep getting told that the banshee cards are now supported in the xsvga server. Any suggestions on how to continue? Thanks. Hi all, Could someone please send me a copy of the relevent parts of your conf.modules file concerning the es1371 sound card, and maybe give me a pointer or two? I've got sound and the sound card driver compiled modularly into the kernel. The card is being detected correctly at boot, and you can see it in, say, the "Devices" part of the kde configuration system, and I'm not getting any odd error messages in /var/log/messages or on the screen when I load and unload the module. However, when I cat /dev/sndstat, I get a "device not found message, even though the soundcore and es1371 modules are loaded and /dev/sndstat exists. Of course, it's not working. I would add that it's living on IRQ 14 (I've got a tape controller card that needs to use IRQ 5), IO D800. Any suggestions would be appreciated- my friendly local library just got a bundle of new classic jazz CDs.
