this happens, instead of telling the person to go look at

how to
unsubscribe (as I recall, it's to send a message to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe). Being more helpful enables them
to go away
faster and not clutter the list.
erm... the instructions for unsubscribing are held in _every_
post that that
person has ever received from the list... all they've got to
do is view "all
headers" and click on the correct one and voila... a perfectly
formated
unsubscribe message is automagically created...
The only ones who can't cope are the ones too clueless to read
the hint that's
held in the footer of every message on these lists. Personally,
I believe
they deserve all the flamage they receive.
Flamage creates even more list traffic. Instead of stomping on the clueless, let's just tell them to send an (arbitrary) message to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com. They'll go away quietly and never be heard from again, which is, I assume, the desired outcome. Sorry to continue this thread, but I just wondered is there a replacement for CKM? I started reading the list just a few weeks before he left, surely someone is in charge? (yeah Ben I've read your posts that several people are "keeping an eye on things" and all credit to you, but a list this busy needs a CKM or replacement). Any news on this? While I'm typing, thanks to all the regs who keep the list sane and OnTopic. Jake

Recieved the confirmation? You recieve a mail you have to reply to, to confirm it's really you. And when you reply to that one, then I guarantee you're unsubscribed. -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogical, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. I have done the followings:

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO REALLY UNSUBSCRIBE ?
There is one thing that can make this go wrong. If you subscribed under on email address, and are trying to cancel under another, but the old email address is being forwarded to you. I see that you are an Optimum Online victim/customer. If you originally got your cablemodem access through another cable company that was subsequently bought by optonline, they will forward emails from your old ISP to your new optonline address, but it's still coming to the list manager as the new address. If this is the case, use the instructions someone else posted a few minutes ago to unsubscribe from a different email address than you're sending from, and specify your old email address. If you saved the "Welcome" message you got when you subscribed, you can confirm my theory. It's always a good idea to stash these away in some folder. You can also look closely at all the headers in the suse list emails coming to you, to see if it really is sending to your current address. If you look at all the headers (I can't tell you how to do that without knowign what email program you use), and see emiramar@ followed by a different domain name, then you know you need to unsubscribe from that address, not your current one. I wonder -- if someone unsubscribes from a different address that has gone dead, how is the confirmation email handled? Is this really a case where there's no way to unsubscribe without manual intervention from the list owner? Paul

CKM always handled this by having them email the list admin address. Then he would unsubscribe them manually. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===--- #147972 ---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org -- Why do we bother with a suicide watch when someone is on death row? Is it possible that you have subscribed under more than one e-mail address? If so, you'll need to unsubscribe from that address as well. Send an empty e-mail to: suse-linux-e-unsubscribe-<Your user name>=<your domain>@suse.com (Note the '=' rather than the '@' in your e-mail address.) If you know how to look at your full headers, there's an unsubscribe address in there that is personalized for your subscription. The entry you are looking for will look something like this: list-unsubscribe: mailto:suse-linux-e-unsubscribe-emiramar=optonline.net@suse.com You can also go to the SuSE web site for further help: http://www.suse.com/us/private/support/online_help/mailinglists/ Good luck. If all else fails, you can shoot the computer. :-) Don Henson
