The tar.gz install is a no-brainer for ddclient. -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

I still use ez-ipupdate, because its so lightweight. I've used it on every SuSE from 7.3 to 10.1. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Thank you guys I found were my problem was I had installed from the CDs, the machine does not have a dvd reader, I checked the dvd and sure thing there it was. I am now havinh problems installing it I get a weird message from yast when using the gui something like "package ddclientddclient not found". I tried then in command line "yast2 -i ddclient-xxx" I get no error messages and it shows up as installed but no runlevel entry is available and no /etc/init.d/ddclient appears either. I have solved my problem as my router is now doing the work of updating with the dyndns sever, but if you can provide advise on what might be wrong, maybe a dependent package, I will be very thankful. Thanks again. If your router sits upstream of your linux box then that is the proper place to do it. Why complicate your machine with another daemon? What does "man ddclient" say? -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

I use ddclient for two domains and it works flawlessly. Actually ddclient is a perl script that needs to be edited (well documented) and adjusted for your setup and then just run it, it sleeps for the time period you set as well so it doesn't upset the folks at dyndns.org. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Really I thought it worked out of the box according to this http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/15845.html george

Well... out of the box it knows nothing about your domain or your login credentials at dyndns.org so it does need to be configured. As I recall the perl script didn't properly support the WRT54G router and I needed to fine tune it as the script insisted on wanting to supply a username which the router does -not- use. Edit the /etc/ddclient.conf file to suit your needs. I also use ddclient because I manage two domains. If I only had one to manage I would use the support built into the router. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

I've configured my WRT54G to do just that, but I haven't been able to get it working. I might have to give ddclient a try myself 'cuz I'm tired of stopping by dyndns once a month to update.

IIANM I added the following to the perl script: 'linksys-ver2' => { 'name' => 'Linksys FW version 2', 'url' => '/Status_Router.asp', 'skip' => 'var wan_ip = ', }, because the it was not correct in the original script and added the following to the ddclient.conf file: use=linksys-ver2, fw=192.168.1.1:80 # via Linksys's internet FW all on one line so watch the line wrap. All this is of course for the WRT54G router and may or may not work with other linksys routers. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

Ken, I take it that was an older version, I've found these two entries in version 3.6.6; 'linksys-ver2' => { 'name' => 'Linksys FW version 2', 'url' => '/RouterStatus.htm', 'skip' => 'WAN.*?Address', }, and 'linksys-wrt854g' => { 'name' => 'Linksys WRT854G FW', 'url' => '/Status_Router.asp', 'skip' => 'IP Address:', }, is it possible either of these would work? If not, should I just change linksys-ver2 to match what you posted instead of adding another listing for ver2? bare with me, I'm not used to doing these sort of things! tks Steve

I am using SuSE 9.3 on the machine that runs ddclient and installed that in May of last year. The memory not being what it once was I seem to recall that I modified the -ver2 entry. I verified the router connection errors I think in /var/log/messages to make the necessary changes. I just know that what I am using works to update both of the domains at dyndns.org that I manage. Also, you can add as many entries in the ddclient script as you want. For the "usr" simply log into the router and note the url used for the status page, I think it is different from what "ver2" shows by default. YMMV. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

It is worth the effort to get it going. I have it set for one of my machines, connected via static IP to a WRT54G, which has a static IP connected to a Speedtouch DSL modem, which is the device that gets the public IP. ddclient is able to get the public IP and update DynDNS. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871

You are right John I am not going to especially when I am having problems getting it going. I am sticking with the router for now.

I uninstalled it as it was not working so no man pages Thanks. g.
