Well, one of them is a lemon. The Asus motherboard was a struggle even with Suse 9.3 It sounds promising, AMD_64, integrated wireless, SATA, gigabit ethernet, sound. nVidia card to round it out. For Suse 9.3, upgrading the bios to 1008 really helped. (1009 breaks it again). Quite stable. Suse 10 is difficult to install. Can't read the DVD consistently. Even installing from the network is problematic. Critical packages won't install. Graphics detection segfaults. Yast segfaults. Online upgrade crashes. Basically unusable. I'd blame the hardware, if 9.3 weren't working so well. What's up with 10? Paul Alfille

SuSE 10 is running on several Asus P4B800 and P4P800 boards here. No problems. 9.3 is on some too. I've never had any problems with SuSE and ASUS, but I stick to the models with a track record. I tried an SE once and it didn't even work well with windows... <shrug>. Mike- -- Mornings: Evolution in action. Thanks, Mike. How does this help except that all Asus boards aren't a problem? Just the one in front of me.

There are a LOT of problems with Asus boards - so much so, that I WON'T buy them and haven't for along time!! Buy Tyan and get a MUCH better made board and one that will work properly. Fred -- Paid purchaser of ALL SuSE Linux releases since 6.x

I've not heard that ASUS recent QC is any better or worse than anyone else's, but dismal support directed at Linux users is reason enough to look elsewhere. http://www.mozillaquest.com/Linux04/Asus_Sucks_Story-01.html -- "I can do all things through Him who gives me strength." I was such a fan of ASUS Motherboards. Currently I own a P4P800 Deluxe, and all works well (SuSE 9.3). But, I will sure have a completely different attitude towards ASUS on my next purchases... -- Rui Santos http://www.ruisantos.com/ They that would give up essential liberty for temporary safety deserve neither one of them.

It's just too difficult and expensive for me to go hunting for another mainboard that might work and might not - I'll stick with Asus. If they discontinue the models that I use I'll reconsider. The only thing that I'm a fan of is equipment that doesn't make me crazy trying to make work... beyond that, I couldn't care less what the brand is or where it's made. Well, this one is driving me crazy. I've been rebooting, rebuilding the rpm database, and trying yast->online update. If I only do a few packages, it doesn't hand before the end. Still, we're talking uptimes of less than ten minutes. I can't help but think there is some magic incantation that will make everything stable. Some setting in ACPI or the network driver (sklin98) that will stop the madness. This is contrast to my SuSE 5.3 server that still gets uptimes >365 days. Not all progress is progress, I guess. Getting happier: BIOS setup Full default Advanced->Onboard->SATA mode->ide (not RAID) Boot->Hard->SATA first Fresh install Unplug USB memory first since it seems to get earlier letters in scsi emulation So far, the installation proceeds without crashing. Updating works. Wow. Who knows what BIOS settings kill SUSE. I'm not venturing there again! Q-fan control, spectrum stuff, who needs it.
I have the ASUS k8v SE version. It seems to run like a charm. But I did have to update the bios twice. Fred A. Miller wrote:

The quality difference with Tyan IS worth the extra money, PLUS they DO openly support Linux - a BIG difference! Fred -- Paid purchaser of ALL SuSE Linux releases since 6.x
Paul I have one of these boards running suse 10 ( and suse 9.3 at one point). I have not met any problems with it at all. Suse 9.3/10 installs without a hitch. I have added the following to this board with all devices found/configured on install. 6 hard drives ( 2 x sata 4x ide) 2 dvd writers (nec 3500 and pioneer 107d) nvidia fx 5900 compro videomate dvb t-200 tv card soundblaster live 5.1 q-tec (sil680) ide raid card USB pci card USB bluetooth adapter All onboard devices (ide, sata controllers, wireless ethernet) were picked up and configured buy suse 9.3/10 with no issues. My bios is revision 1008 Not sure why your having such a hard time with this board. send be me your bios settings and i'll compare with my mine and check for any differences. Well, I'm actually happier now. Uptime of almost 2 days! 1. BIOS 1008 is clearly a winner. I suppose I could retry 1009 but that sounds painful, and they claim the upgrade is mainly support for dual-code processors. 2. I now run the default BIOS settings except A. SATA IDE instead of RAID B. Boot priority CD then HD, moving USB devices down C. Video priority PCX rather than PCI (I have two cards) (Actually this one works either way). By the way, I experimented with the Coo'n'Quiet and the PlugandPlayAwareOS settings. Turning either on makes the system unstable. Go figure.
