Has anyone else tried the new linux version of Opera 7? I downloaded it today after reading about it on The Register and it's pretty nice, and seems stable here (SuSE 8.1). It's available from http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/353-20030214-P1/. I found that the rpm wouldn't install (unmet dependency - needed libXm.so.2 when my system has libXm.so.3) but the static binary is fine - no need to install because it's self-contained. Someone asked me off the list whether it supported Java. Well, I've had a quick look and it *should* do, but seems not to work with my setup (j2re1.4.1_01, ns4 plugin), checked on the news.bbc.co.uk site, although mozilla does work on this page. I checked the opera script that sets the java path and inserted my plugin path, but it seems not to work. Someone with more knowledge than me could probably get it to work, or at least tell us whether or not it will work! It accepted the directory I pointed it to... (there's a test option) but when I found that javascript doesn't even work, I gave up on Version 7.

Assuming you're talking about the linux version, it's not even an alpha, it's just a snapshot. A pre-pre-alpha, so to speak. A little early to "give up on it"

I'll accept that it might have bugs... and will wait for a later versions. Result? I've given up on it (for now). -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S. Odd. I've had little problem with it, browsing various sites. I haven't checked the JS support, nor am I especially bothered by the lack of Java ATM. It does render pages very nicely, and has some nice interface touches (plus the little animation flourishes if you like that sort of thing). But it *is* only listed as a preview release, so we can't expect everything yet :-/ John -- John Pettigrew Headstrong Games john@headstrong-games.co.uk Fun : Strategy : Price http://www.headstrong-games.co.uk/ Board games that won't break the bank Valley of the Kings: ransack an ancient Egyptian tomb but beware of mummies!

In general I like the looks of it too but was bothered by its wanting to spread out a page in a strange fashion... lots of 'clear' space on the left, most of the page in the middle, and maybe not enough room for the right side of the page on the right. Resulted in some scrolling to see the whole page... Couldn't find a way to fix it. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S. I didn't see that, but it looks like they might have some work to do on the rendering engine, then... Hi,
I installed & am trying Opera 7 and its "revolutionary e-mail client" for
the first time now. I had a few probs by now :
- With only one window open, when i click on that window's tab, teh window
disappears. The tab stays still, but i can't get the page back.
-m2 has mailing lists folders, which are determined & created
automatically. That's really nice, but they're not the all lists i'm
subscribed to. One of my subscribed lists does not have a folder; and i
couldn't succeed to create one. In fact, i couldn't create any filter in
the filters window.
It has a really nice gui & usage. Don't know about java & js support yet.
Hope all will be fine with a stable version.
Regards,
