[S.u.S.E. Linux] Upgrading SuSE from version to version
I'm sure this is a FAQ and is covered in some documentation somewhere, but, as per usual, I can't seem to find it. I'm looking for information on how the upgrade process of SuSE works. Specifically: - Are SuSE 5.2 packages meant to run on a 5.1 suse system? - Can one upgrade from SuSE 5.1 to SuSE 5.2 without acquiring the CD-ROMs? in more detail: - Are SuSE 5.2 packages meant to run on a 5.1 suse system? I would assume some packages will work. However, as you go to 6.0 with glibc, I imagine some compatability of binaries will break. Is there ever an implicit assumption of package binary compatability, or when mix/matching distributions are "all bets off"? - Can one upgrade from SuSE 5.1 to SuSE 5.2 without acquiring the CD-ROMs? While I would like to encourage everyone to support this wonderful operating system as much as possible, I am somewhat loathe to plunk down another 40-50$ for something i bought just 2 months ago or so. (Do not think too poorly of me! I sponsored a new linux user into SuSE just last month, ie. 25$ each). In addition, my main SuSE system is miles and miles from here and rather inconvenient to approach physically, while it has a very speedy network connection. By reading through the SuSE book it seems that if i have the CD-ROM media and a boot disk that I could indeed use YaST to update update the entirety of the base system, and then proceed to boot up under the new base and update the remaining packages. I can consider this, should my other options fail. I understand that it is necessary to have an alternate set of system files for updating purposes. The 'normal' method being the supplied CD-ROM. The README.FTP file outlines a method supplied using hard links, if I properly understand things. Surprisingly, this file only talks about NFS, not FTP. Is this a 'legacy' thing, or is it possible to use FTP and I'm just a complete dunderhead? Lastly, if it truly is only possible to upgade is it conceivable to set up a NFS mirror of the ftp.suse.com/pub/SuSE-Linux/5.2 tree, or is this one of the incentives to purchase the CD sets oneself? -josh -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
