I'm sure, in previous SUSE versions, apps like Rosegarden were included, but this doesn't seem to be the case any more. I'm running 10.0 OSS - fair enough, lots of stuff is missing from this. However, checking out the package listing for Novell's release version shows Rosegarden absent (although Jack and JAMin are included). Can anyone tell me the best way to get audio sampling and mixing working under SUSE 10.0? I'm wanting to start recording some of my music. It'll be through a USB-connected M-Audio Black Box - this ought to be supported because it's "class compliant" but can anyone confirm? And what's the best way to get Rosegarden or other similar stuff (I'm also rather interested in Ardour, the open-source DAW) working? I was also wondering whether it might be easier to use Studio-To-Go, which is a CD-based linux distro aimed specifically at being a home studio, with Ardour, Rosegarden et al. all included and set up. Has anyone any experience of this? TiA! Jono Bacon has been working on some Linux studio (audio) software. I can find out how far he's got if you like. Jono is part of LUGradio in case you didn't know the name. He and others were rather disappointed with the sotware availabel for studio recording so they set about writing their own. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Xmas may be over but, PLEASE DON'T drink and drive you'll make it to the next one that way. Thanks for the offer, but I suspect that's a little beyond me. I'm just looking for a little home recording :-) I'm sure that Rosegarden or Ardour would be more than sufficient for me, if only I could work out the best way to install them! Otherwise, I'll probably be using my ancient 500 MHz B3 iBook and Mac OSX, with the M-Audio software that comes with my recording hardware... Use the install-apt4suse script (rpm) to get apt installed, configured and running on your machine. Then a simple 'apt-get install rosegarden' will get you up and running. Though I suggest running 'apt-get -s install rosegarden' first to see what dependencies are required. [http://susewiki.org/index.php?title=Install-apt4suse] apt is an excellent package manager and really is very easy to use. It will even take care of dependencies for you, and it will run SuSEconfig and ldconfig automatically after installing packages. Just don't get too comfortable with apt, since it is being replaced by smart in future releases. For the time being, apt is stable and package repositories are being actively maintained by a number of reputable SUSErs. JMHO -- Christopher Shanahan

I have Rosegarden installed on SuSE 10.0. Packman has it available for SUSE 10. You may not have set up Packman as one of your sources. My source is: http://packman.sharewarestorage.com/archive/suse/10.0/ I do have a problem with Rosegarden though and because of that I haven't used it yet. I keep getting this error message when I launch it: "System timer resolution is too low Rosegarden was unable to find a high-resolution timing source for MIDI performance. This may mean you are using a Linux system with the kernel timer resolution set too low. Please contact your Linux distributor for more information." I'm not sure what this is or how to resolve it. <snip>

Thanks for the info on the Studio-To-Go distro. I think I might give it a try. Mike

I forgot to mention that Ardour is not available for SUSE 10 but the version for 9.3 is reported to work with 10. It's available here: http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/2635668/com/ardour-0.99.2-0.oc2p... I've installed it but haven't tried using it yet. Mike

I've installed it but haven't tried using it yet. I spent a few hours trying to get it work with no success.
Of course, my main problems is I cannot get this JACK thing to work, so by default Ardour doesn't work. :( -- kai - www.perfectreign.com www.livebeans.com - the new NetBeans community 43...for those who require slightly more than the answer to life, the universe and everything.

Hi All, Here are some resources that I found very helpful when I was setting up sound and recording/mixing/editing applications on my system: http://www.djcj.org/LAU/guide/index.php http://www.studio-to-go.com/ (formerly www.linuxmusician.com) http://linux-sound.org/ Good luck! Carl
