Fwd: Re: [opensuse] KDE3-4 did teams change?
As you didn't answer off list as you first answered, I thought I'd send my reply to the list. ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: Re: [opensuse] KDE3-4 did teams change? I have descrived, that you can configure your Desktop, like the KDE3 one. Were is the Problem. Do that and leave the new features behind.
OK.. I'll buy that. But there are certain things I like. What I don't understand is how the upgrades from KDE1 to 2 to 3 went so well. basically copy over the old setting and go. None of this plasmoid/widget/whatever the new name BS. I'm sorry, but it looks a lot like Vista. I tried to resize the panel. Never did figure that one out. I don't like it stretched all the way across the bottom of the desktop. That's personal. One person said that I should go out and read up on all the new "features". There's a page somewhere to find all of this. Didn't need that on the other upgrades. There were changes between the others too, but you didn't need a book to figure it out.
But it looks like you do not like new things at all. Looks like you are not willing to accept anything which is not *exactly* KDE3.
I do like them. When they work. The first time I tried KDE4, it didn't work. And it was plainly stated that 4.0 was a work in progress and not really ready for prime time. But I tried it anyway. First impressions are ones that stick. Gave 4.1 a look and although some thing worked a bit better, it still wasn't functional for me. The first install didn't even have the menu icon. What good is that?
So go together with all the others thinking this way and do the support for KDE3 as long as you need it. Because you aren't interested in any new features, this may be possible even for a small team.
When did I say I wasn't interested in new features? I said that it should work. Not be a mishmash of ideas that aren't complete or even close to being complete. Is it pretty? I guess. Does it work for me? No. I imagine it will though one of these days. I'll keep checking. At the risk of causing cross distribution trouble, the Fedora Project are hosting a 'KDE 4 for KDE 3 users' IRC class this Saturday. More details are here: http://rdieter.livejournal.com/10249.html Maybe that might answer some questions. Or maybe it will degenerate into a total scrum of trolling, we'll see. I've managed to sort out my (few and minor) niggles with KDE4.1.2 now and I'll be sticking with it, but I'll be popping in to see what I can learn. Why should we need a class on how to use a desktop? Did you need to take a class to be able to use GNOME or any other desktop? Sure, there were some things that took longer to figure out than others, but a class??

Some like it, and some don't. It's not trolling. KDE4 should have been named something else, IMO. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yep, I really think a class is needed. I whined and bitched about the lack of configurable options on the taskbar until I was shown how to do what I wanted. I don't know how many people who are griping about KDE4 just haven't spent the time to understand how it's improved in certain areas, but I know for a fact that a lot just haven't bothered looking. Sadly, they're very vocal - just look at this patheric subject line coming around again.

Maybe. Maybe it should have been called KDE5, then KDE4 could have been left to the people who like things just the way they are, but with a few more configurable keys. Hardware moves on, why can't software? Or if you don't want to change desktop, why restrict everyone else? For me, KDE4 shows great promise, so if you're happy with KDE3, go ahead and enjoy it, nobody is stopping you. Just don't hold KDE back because you don't like it's direction. Get involved and add your voice. Cheers Pete -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
