Exporting HTML for MS Word
Okay, I've had a brain fart. I'm working on my resume, and I have the copy I like in HTML format. I've tweaked it by hand (vim), filtered it (tidy), and verified that it looks the same in all of the browsers I have installed, so it should be good. How do I get this bloody thing to MS Word .doc format for all of the moron recruiters that want to read my resume but don't know how to click on "Save As"? So far, I've tried using AbiWord, which simply reports that the document is invalid or corrupt. BS; Tidy said it was perfeclty valid HTML, why doesn't the XHMTL renderer in AbiWord take it? I also tried StarWriter, but I can't find a place to export it to Word'97. I thought I could do this once upon a time, but I suppose I'm wrong. -- -=|JP|=- Need a good geek? I'm unemployed! And hopefully don't know how to do web searches :)

"Save as", and selecting word 97 from the dropdown doesn't work? //Anders

I don't quite understand this remark, but you're probably right about that much...the head hunters around here are genuine morons.

Well, no, it's not on the list. I'm starting to think that I misinstalled SO and somehow forgot to check the MS Office export filters... -- -=|JP|=- Need a good geek? I'm unemployed! I was referring to your calling them "morons" :)

OK, I checked it out. What you have to do (for some reason) is choose "save as" Star writer text/web (.sxw), reload as that format, and then Word 97 will appear in the "save as" dropdown //Anders

OH! Yeah, well, each and every one of those little blood suckers knows *exactly* what I think of them. They just can't see past the dollar signs and work with me anyway. You know how that works, right? I don't know about youre locale, but they take commissions around here and could genuinely care less whether you *or* the employer is happy, so long as they get their cut.

Like I said, it was a brain fart; I knew this. Thank you, Anders. :) -- -=|JP|=- Need a good geek? I'm unemployed! My MS Word has no trouble with the .html which I've been editing in StarWriter. Your message reminds me of 2 years ago when I would send resumes capable of displaying both in Word97 and in WP8/linux to linux shops and they would reply with a request for a Word-95 only version. So I'm working in a primarily Windows job. -- Tim Prince tprince@computer.org

Clearly you don't understand my problem (which is now solved). :) As far as these ex-football players and accounting flunkies know, Explorer is for HTML and Word is for DOC, and there is no cross-usability of the two. Did you catch my comment about them not knowing how to use "Save As?" ;) -- -=|JP|=- Need a good geek? I'm unemployed! Oddly, I had the same guess than Anders: Go to www.google.com and search for "Jon Pennington". It takes you straight to the list archives. ;-) That's way we never get a Job with microsoft. ;-) Juergen PS: Sorry, but no more suggestions to your problem than stated before... ;-(

I don't know that I'd accept even if I were offered. But even so, thank heavens for a common name :) //Anders
