USB-HDD: Is this strange or what?
Hi list users! I played with two identical USB HDD tokens in my suse 9.1 recently, and noticed something strange. It seems that the mounting point gets named after the make and type of usb token, which might cause problems when one inserts two identical devices at once. With two devices that differ in brand/type I have never had any name conficts. I would appreciate if someone posts any explanation, solution or workaround for this kind of problem... Thanx in advance, cikasole p.s. Here is some copy/pasted text from console (together with my inline comments/explanationsm) that I hope might help to get an idea what I am talking about: (Yes, some long lines may be wrapped) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is "mount" after inserting the first USB HDD (output edited to show just the lines that are relevant here): sole@wilbur:~> mount usbfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw) /dev/sda1 on /media/usb-storage-odd-Generic-MassStorageDevice:0:0:0p1 type subfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,sync,procuid,iocharset=utf8) Here is "mount" after I remove the 1st USB HDD: sole@wilbur:~> mount usbfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw) Then, I insert the 2nd USB HDD and after that I have this: sole@wilbur:~> mount usbfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw) /dev/sda1 on /media/usb-storage-odd-Generic-MassStorageDevice:0:0:0p1 type subfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,sync,procuid,iocharset=utf8) Let's show some contents (file names are edited, as well as the mount command output...) sole@wilbur:~>dir /media/usb-storage-odd-Generic-MassStorageDevice\:0\:0\:0p1/ total 124352 drwxr-xr-x 2 sole users 2048 2004-11-09 21:15 aaaaa -rwxr-xr-x 1 sole users 80123557 2004-11-09 12:39 OOo_1.1.3_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 sole users 47205416 2004-11-09 12:02 OOo_1.1.3_Win32Intel_install.exe drwxr-xr-x 3 sole users 2048 2004-11-09 21:15 System Volume Information drwxr-xr-x 2 sole users 2048 2004-10-08 14:22 uuuuu Now, I inserted the 1st USB HDD without removing the other one. Here is "mount" with both USB HDDs inserted: sole@wilbur:~> mount usbfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw) /dev/sda1 on /media/usb-storage-odd-Generic-MassStorageDevice:0:0:0p1 type subfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,sync,procuid,iocharset=utf8) /dev/sdb1 on /media/usb-storage-odd-Generic-MassStorageDevice:0:0:0p1 type subfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,sync,procuid,iocharset=utf8) *Note that both sda1 and sdb1 are mounted to the same mounting point* Now, the content is the one of the last inserted USB HDD, as we see here: sole@wilbur:~>dir /media/usb-storage-odd-Generic-MassStorageDevice\:0\:0\:0p1/ total 21714 -rwxr-xr-x 1 sole users 2636408 2004-10-11 18:42 xxxxxx drwxr-xr-x 2 sole users 2048 2004-11-09 21:17 yyyyyy -rwxr-xr-x 1 sole users 8623151 2004-11-09 15:55 firefox-1.0.installer.tar.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 sole users 4918270 2004-11-09 15:53 Firefox Setup 1.0.exe drwxr-xr-x 2 sole users 2048 2004-11-01 17:53 zzzzzz -r-xr-xr-x 1 sole users 7264 2003-11-28 17:17 qqqqqq.sxw drwxr-xr-x 2 sole users 2048 2004-10-15 16:08 wwwwww drwxr-xr-x 3 sole users 2048 2004-11-04 00:58 ssssss -rwxr-xr-x 1 sole users 5295 2004-10-09 16:25 rrrrrr.html drwxr-xr-x 4 sole users 2048 2004-11-04 00:43 System Volume Information -rwxr-xr-x 1 sole users 6027194 2004-11-09 15:56 Thunderbird Setup 0.9.exe drwxr-xr-x 3 sole users 2048 2004-11-04 13:12 pppppp How to distinguish between the two tokens when it happens that they are of the same make and type? --------------------------------------------------------------------------
