You need to get the very latest ethernet drivers from Donald Becker's site at:
http://www.scyld.com/network/updates.html ftp://ftp.scyld.com/pub/network/netdriver-2.0.src.rpm
It will not work with the old driver (at all). (I bought three of these at CompUSA also -- it is a small world.)
I'll second that! and even smaller amongst us hacker types :)
You have not got a working card driver loaded yet -- once you have, you can use yast to configure and it will work (and you might want to take a look at /etc/rc.config to see if there are any more options you want to use -- be sure to remember to run SuSEconfig after modifying /etc/rc.config or configuring with yast (if it forgets to do so for you, as it sometimes will)).
I've downloaded the netdriver-2.0.src and run rpm -i on the file. Becker's site says that I have to rebuild the kernel now. Is there some cheatsheet instruction on howto rebuild and install the SuSE kernel anywhere? Or can you give me the cookbook instructions? (eg)
% cd /usr/src/linux % make kernel; install kernel; % reboot...
You should download and install the ftp://ftp.sourceforge.net/pub/suse/suse/i386/update/6.4/kernel-2.2.16 -rw-r--r-- 1 debian 1002 6834230 Jul 9 18:38 k_deflt.rpm -rw-r--r-- 1 debian 1002 6946515 Jul 9 19:24 k_eide.rpm -rw-r--r-- 1 debian 1002 7008690 Jul 9 19:10 k_i386.rpm -rw-r--r-- 1 debian 1002 6920849 Jul 9 19:12 k_laptop.rpm -rw-r--r-- 1 debian 1002 7095975 Jul 9 19:18 k_smp.rpm -rw-r--r-- 1 debian 1002 19950192 Jul 8 16:39 lx_suse.rpm Get the source lx_suse.rpm, as well as the compiled kernel of your choice, and install both. (Make sure you run lilo after installing the compiled kernel) Then copy the file: /boot/vmlinuz.config to the file /usr/src/linux/.config cd /usr/src/linux make menuconfig And at this point, if you want to, you can examine the options which your installed kernel was compiled with -- if you do not want to change anything you do not really need to do so -- just exit. (If you do, you will have to compile and install your own kernel.) Now you can compile and install Donald Becker's new driver rpm (BTW people the kernel that SuSE-6.4 ships with, and all kernels 2.2.12-2.2.15 have a gaping local root exploit as well as several lesser bugs -- so upgrade if you have any reason to fear being cracked.)
...Can't be that simple, but whatever.
thanks for the driver info!!

Hi Mark, To heavy for a Nic module setup, isn't it?? Do you think that is really needed to upgrade to Kernel 2.2.16 for that matter. Must be simpler, or not?? Obviously Gary can take all steps without risk, more after he said he will upgrade to SuSE 7.0, and can simply break his comp in pieces. Anyway it is a good practice and his first time, though. Gary, If you choose to, up to you, just first download the SuSE 6.4 PDF Manual from: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/6.4/docu/book-en.pdf and read the Part V, The Kernel and Its Parameters beginning on page 329, there you find a complete explanation, with all the required steps, of the whole process. Have Luck!! My personal opinion and experience is to go step by step and do not miss a bit on the middle. Mark Gray wrote:
