[SuSE Linux] Using an 8 Gig disk
Hi, SuSE Linux 6.0. Kernel 2.0.36. I have a machine with an 8 Gb drive, Linux only. I have the 3 standard partitions / (/dev/hda3), /boot (/dev/hda1) and /swap (/dev/hda2 128Mb), which were proposed by Yast. When I run fsck on /dev/hda3 it's telling me something about 1027 cylinders and that it should be 1024 or otherwise it will give problems with programs like LILO. I am experiencing strange things such as random crashing, especially after heavy use of SMB. I also have the impression that the machine is booting from /dev/hda3 iso. /dev/hda1. That is if I boot from SuSE CD-ROM 1, and then try to boot from /dev/hda1 it's telling me it can't. Sorry for the confused problem description, but does this make sense to anyone? Is an 8 Gb drive perhaps too big for Linux ? Kind regards, == Koen Dejonghe tel: +32 (0)2 712 3668 _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? I currently have an 8.4Gb IBM drive and have no problems under Linux /boot is /dev/hda2 since I have DOS at /dev/hda1. My other partitions start at /dev/hda5 since I use one large extended /dev/hda3 for all the other logical partitions where I have swap /opt /home and /. I'm not sure what SMB is but I don't think it is related to the drive size. I also have the fdisk warning about cyl 1027 vs 1024. I just got mail about the gftp rpm's, so I downloaded it. I have gtk 1.1.13 on my box, but yet the rpm would not install. I downloaded the source myself and it compiled fine. I guess my question is : Once one has made an rpm and it thinks it needs a certain version of a depended program library it won't install? I am usually a src type of person..but I thought I would give rpm a try... Same here. Drive /dev/hdb is an 8.4 GB drive and fdisk gives the same error message. My root partition is on /dev/hda2. Other than the fdisk error message the system is running fine.

That probably means you tried to install lilo in the root partition, not the mbr? Make sure your /dev/hda1 is the first on the drive, and mount /boot there, and put your kernel and System Map in /boot. Then install lilo in the mbr of /dev/hda

No, the 8 gig drive is definitely ok with linux. It sounds like you have a glitch in the partitions. Did you use linux's fdisk to do the original partitions? Or was it done by dos or window's fdisk? The hda numbers are assigned as you make them. /dev/hda1 is not neccesarily the first on the drive. It could be at the end of the drive if you created it at the end of free space. Also check that /dev/hda1 is smaller than 1024 cylinders, you only need about 10 megs, or 1 sector. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
