[opensuse] Command Line vs GUI
I am looking to optimize performance using OpenSuSE 10.3 as a Samba Server. When you "Log Out" does that close the GUI..? I.E., I'd like a command line system that can go GUI with startx, but otherwise, remain as a console. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Set the system to boot into run-level 3. There's a choice of ways but the easiest way is probably to edit /etc/inittab and change the line: id:5:initdefault: to id:3:initdefault: Regards, David Bolt -- Team Acorn: http://www.distributed.net/ OGR-P2 @ ~100Mnodes RC5-72 @ ~15Mkeys SUSE 10.1 32bit | openSUSE 10.2 32bit | openSUSE 10.3 32bit | openSUSE 11.0b1 SUSE 10.1 64bit | openSUSE 10.2 64bit | openSUSE 10.3 64bit RISC OS 3.6 | TOS 4.02 | openSUSE 10.3 PPC | RISC OS 3.11 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

As others have suggested, editing /etc/inittab (or doing the equivalent point and click procedures in yast) will give you what you asked for - but note that you may be disappointed in the result. I've done server benchmarks with and without GUI, and there is no discernible difference. Exactly right. The only way you will see a difference is if you only have 256M of RAM. Then you will run into the "potential" of file swapping when other services are run on the computer that may impact performance. Otherwise, samba, apache, etc. just don't care whether a gui is running or not. A full operating KDE/compiz/apache/samba/dhcp/bind/... and more uses 190-220M of memory. Samba is more than happy in that scenario. (The only box I have that I have stuck in runlevel 3 for memory/performance purposes is an old AMDk6-2(450) with 256M that is used as a hylafax server.) With something that old, xdm running might be an issue. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E.
