I went from XP to SuSE, but Win was faster!!!!!!!!
I bet this subject will turn some heads ;) I had Win XP home installed on my comp previously with the exact same hardware config (actually when i had windows on the comp it had 128 LESS RAM than it does now, as well as more periferals, namely a joystick and a printer) I hate to say it, but XP was running faster and better then my current Linux installation. I WANT TO PROVE TO MYSELF THAT LINUX IS BETTER THAN WIN XP BUT IT IS HARD TO DO WHEN XP WAS RUNNING FASTER IN ALL DEPARTMENTS THEN LINUX evan though the harware config IS IN FAVER OF LINUX. i am running SuSE 8.2 pro on a comp w/ a 500 MHz intel celeron and ~500 MB RAM. It is going to be a server but KDE runs kind of slow while i am working on it. Any tips on how i can get it running faster. Things like unnessisary functions that are automatically started upon startup that i can disable, fancy things like animated menues that can be disabled, or just miner tweeks that i can apply to sqeeze a little more speed out of my proccesor. I am setting up a server also, but I don't find the problems you have, however, I am running SuSE 9.0. My suggestions from what I have learned. 1. Boot into runlevel 3. This can be done by setting up the boot with yast. 2. By booting into runlevel 3, if you want to use GUI for setup, then all you have to do is login and startx. This keeps KDE and/or Gnome out of the picture. After you are finished, you logout and the computer is back to runlevel 3. You do not have to be loggein as root or user for the server to perform its functions as a server and is also more secure. 3. I am planning on upgrading to SuSE 9.1 when it comes out. I have updated KDE to 3.2.1 and it is much faster. The new 2.6 kernel is supposed to be faster even. 4. Turn off services that you are not using. Art On Mon, 2004-03-15 at 22:06, Scott Wrobel wrote:

It is. I tried Quake3 on WinXp and Linux 2.6 and the second gave me a better impression. Praise
Nice trolling, most of us here have dual boots and we know very well how fast or not Windows works. tisdag 16 mars 2004 07:06 skrev Scott Wrobel:

Well, it seems more people took the bait this time than the first, Fergus. ;o) This same mail was posted a day or two ago and everybody just left it alone as troll bait, but I guess all that responded this time had not seen it before. It's best to just ignore these types of mails, as they go away quickly. Lee -- --- KMail v1.6.1 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.0 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...
I run WinXP and SuSE8.1 on the same hardware, choosing one or the other at bootup time. Scanning the same negatives using the same film scanner etc, using Vuescan both under WinXP or SuSE, WinXP takes about 50% longer on my machine. Pentium4 2.8GHz, 512MB. 10 minutes under linux, 15 minutes under WinXP. I also did some speed test testing the download speed from a website, even after improving the standard settings on WinXP SuSE was still 20% faster. Again, same hardware.
