As I read the posts and compare my experiences with SuSE and my equipment I bean to ask myself (and now you): If I were to build a pesonal use system from scratch what products would I use (What would I AVOID)? It seems my Asus A7N8X-E board is less than ideal (especially the ethernet and Nvidia pieces.) So too my "left over" M$ keyboard and 4-button+scroll mouse. So, if you were starting over for a personal home system (and wanting to have a single networked computer - your wife's win98 machine) what would you do? I use a Asus A7V8X-X and it seems to work just fine with SuSE 9.0
So, if you were starting over for a personal home system (and wanting to have a single networked computer - your wife's win98 machine) what would you do?
What I would do is build the machine to hardware that is known to work with SuSE. I have the following Asus A7V8X-X mobo AMD XP 3000+ processor Nvidia Ti4200 vid card Audigy 2 ZS 100mbit network card I am not using the sound or the nic that is on board this machine. A freind of mine who has the same mobo stated that his onboard nic worked fine.

I am only recommending a keyboard: when you next get to a computer show or fleamarket, try and find an IBM keyboard. If you need to adapt it, get the adapter. These KB's are nearly indestructable, unless you lose key parts, the connecting cords are replaceable --with the other kind of plug, BTW--they have an excellent touch, unless you like silent soft keying. I don't suppose there are new ones around, but whatever--they're unbeatable. And the older ones don't have the goofy "Windows keys." If you need one, there was also a "shrunken" version, about 3" shorter, that you could use in restricted spaces. I wish I could get a few more IBM keyboards, I picked one up from a show some years ago and it has a PS/2 connector. One drawback is that they are not silent and can be annoying the other guys if you have a hands-free phone conference going and typing at the same time, rare for me these days.
