I checked the log, but it doesn't show an error. In fact, it shows that the mode change to 1280x1024 succeeded, it also shows the change back to 1600x1200 succeeded. Problem is that it the change to 1280x1024 resulted in a 640x480 screen, not a 1280x1024 screen. The entry lines for the 1280x1024 mode look right and the refresh rate number is correct.

Believe that I would check /etc/X11/XF86Config that the parameters for 'monitor' were the same as what was on the cd *.inf file provided with your monitor. I would guess the HorizSync, DisplaySize or VertRefresh was wrong. If that is not it, the Modeline for 1280x1024 is incorrect.
