My impressions of SuSE 9.3 after 72 hours...
Hello all, Here's a short report on my impressions of SuSE 9.3 so far I installed 9.3 as soon as I got. I did a fresh install and ran the update during the installation - I downloaded all of the patchs (except forre the nVida drivers). Here is a list of my problems/remarks to date. #1 My sound card SB Live! 5.1 Model SB0100 doesn't work. I figure that I just might have d/l one too patchs - there are/were 4 patchs packs - I install them all... "lsmod | grep snd" show the following... snd_emu10k1 111748 0 snd_rawmidi 30752 1 snd_emu10k1 snd_seq_device 12940 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi snd_ac97_codec 78328 1 snd_emu10k1 snd_pcm 109828 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_ac97_codec snd_timer 31108 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm snd_page_alloc 14340 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm snd_util_mem 9088 1 snd_emu10k1 snd_hwdep 13472 1 snd_emu10k1 snd 71172 8 snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_util_mem,snd_hwdep soundcore 13664 1 snd #2 There's no webmin rpm on the DVD and the lastest version at the webmin site (webmin-1.200-1.noarch.rpm) still needs to updated so that it will install on 9.3 #3 The installation of Tomcat5*-webapps-5.0.30-4 fails #4 I keep running SaX2 to update my screen settings regularly because the screen setting move around (i.e. the screen doesn't always reboot centered correctly). My monitor is a Sony 19" LCD screen which is a couple of years old. #5 I much prefer Open Office v1.9.91 to Open Office version that SuSE comes with. I re-installed Open Office v1.9.91 after toughing it out with the Open Office version that SuSE comes with for 48 hours. There should be a new version out any day now - I can hardly wait. #6 When I boot to root - it takes alot loter (say 4 x longer) than with v9.2. Wonder why. Voila et voila... I am not complaining - I am just offering this comments in hope that they will be quickly fixed.

Are you sure your mixer just doesn't have something muted or volume turned down?

Hmmm I also started having problems this evening with my sound (onboard SiS 7018 using ac'97). Worked perfectly until I had to shut the computer down. Brought it back up and... no sound. After much tinkering I decided to give YaST a try and removed and reinstalled the sound card. Everythign seemed OK. Still in YaST I went to the volume settings and clicked the Test button. I got two stutters of sound and then nothing... Nothing in the messages log either... I fired up alsaconfig, and got the exact same results as with YaST... it found my sound card, seemed to config it without probs... and then when it tests the sound I get two notes... and nothing else... Sigh... it was all going so well.
i think artsd is causing you problems.kill it and disable in kcontrol and restart sound, see if that helps. -- michael On Thu, 21 Apr 2005, Clayton wrote:

I agree, I have a Sound Blaster live and if I play a CD or a sound file I have no sound but when I unmute it with alsamixer and turn it up, turn up master, PCM, and AUX. This solved my problem.

Just out of interest, what is it about it you prefer? I'm not much of an office user so I'm not familiar with the details.

What do you mean when you say 'boot to root' exactly?

What I meanr to say was that when I log in as root and I give my password - it takes awhile (like at least 10-15 seconds) for it to be validated on my 2.6.11.4-20a-smp setup. That is alot slower than before (using 9.2).

I think I read somewhere that the default authentication on 9.3 is kerberos. I know that when I switched to kerberos authentication on 9.2 the login took noticeably longer. Not sure if that is what is happening in your case, but it is a thought. Mike -- Michael A. I have on-motherboard sound and a recognized board that worked fine in my 9.1 setup. For reasons I have not yet ascertained, the card won't work. I disabled it and recabled my audio hook-ups and all is working, now.
#2 There's no webmin rpm on the DVD and the lastest version at the webmin site (webmin-1.200-1.noarch.rpm) still needs to updated so that it will install on 9.3
Odd. I was just about to (try to) install Webmin. I guess I'll just wait a while.
#3 The installation of Tomcat5*-webapps-5.0.30-4 fails
Go into /usr/lib/jvm and look closely at the symlinks. You'll see that there are symlink targets that use underscores where in fact the actual target directories (or intermediate symlinks--I forget now) use dots instead. Once you fix these symlinks you can install Tomcat. As I reported earlier (Subject "Tomcat Under 9.3 Not Working", to which I got no replies), Tomcat will still not run because there is at least one dependency that is unresolved when it attempts to start up. This, too, I've yet to track down and fix. If you get to it before I do, please report here (or to SuSE-Programming-E) on what the problem is and what resolution you devised.
#4 I keep running SaX2 to update my screen settings regularly because the screen setting move around (i.e. the screen doesn't always reboot centered correctly). My monitor is a Sony 19" LCD screen which is a couple of years old.
I had to reconfigure a lot of application font settings because X.org is presenting them with a different idea of the screen resolution. It is the wrong resolution (75 dpi, while in truth it's closer to 102 dpi), but oddly enough, I seem to get better font rendering quality with this lie. Perhaps it's something about hinting.
#5 I much prefer Open Office v1.9.91 to Open Office version that SuSE comes with. I re-installed Open Office v1.9.91 after toughing it out with the Open Office version that SuSE comes with for 48 hours. There should be a new version out any day now - I can hardly wait.

I'm not noticing an appreciable difference.
Voila et voila...
I am not complaining - I am just offering this comments in hope that they will be quickly fixed.
