[opensuse] 13.1 + vlc + Blu-ray
Has anyone successfully tamed vlc in 13.1 to be able to view a Blu-ray file(mt2)? I specifically mention a 'file' because vlc in oS will not play a Bd disc (vlc in Windows([8) will [#]) but vlc will play either a Bd movie if you open a Directory (and it then searches for the mt2 file to play) or select a specific mt2 file to play ---- BUT this happens in 12.3 and NOT in 13.1, hence my question above. As far as I can see I have all the necessary rpms installed for vlc to play an mt2 file but I keep getting the error message that vlc is unable to play an h264 file and that "there is nothing I can about it." But I can play the same Bd disc in oS 12.3 - so what has been done in 13.1 to make vlc stop playing Bd? Suggestions gratefully accepted as I am hate having to reboot into 12.3 from 13.1 when I want to watch a Bd disc. I don't have a "commercial" Bd either. So, which vlc are you using- the one from openSUSE or one which you downloaded directly from Videolan and installed (possibly using the 1-clik install)? I am using the one from oS and it is version 2.1.2 Rincewind (whatever 'Rincewind' is) in 13.1 (I haven't looked at what I have in 12.3 but I do know that that one came from Videolan). The VLC from openSUSE? or Packman?
This is where I am confused, bemused, and anything else which may rhyme with the preceding 2 words. VLC shows up here as coming from any one of 3 sources: packman, videolan, "Main Repository (OSS)....vendor openSUSE". The one I was looking at when I wrote the post was openSUSE but since then I have done an update and now it is showing packman. So the bottom line is: which one should I be using- the one directly from videolan or from packman? I do know that I had a dependency conflict when I did the updates earlier and now I don't remember which option I selected to get rid of the dependency problem. (These dependency problems are becoming a pain in the ass! Prior to 13.1 there were hardly any of these problems.)
Have you added the vlc-codecs? Do you need libdvdcss?
I've got the lot! :-) . But obviously not quite the lot or at least one from the wrong source.
Rincewind is a character (a failed student at the Unseen University) from the Discworld series.
Figures - this vlc is also a failure....... BC PS I haven't checked (I just remembered about it :-( ) but k3b did not want to make a copy of an audio CD - kept coming up with an error that it didn't recognise the disc, or something. Hi, After re-reading the thread, one thing puzzles me... afaicr, BD is supposed to be using a stronger encryption than the one used on DVD's. If that is really true, one should not be able to pay commercial BD's with only libdvdcss. Or is that just a bunch of FUD spread by "uncle Walt" & Sony ... ? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, it's true it's a different system and harder, but it sounds like progress has been made... See this thread: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/multimedia/488250... I have read the above 2 URLs and I thank you for them. I am aware about what is stated in the first URL but the second one added some knowledge - but was of no real help :-( . As I stated in my first post, I have *NO* problems in viewing Blu-ray discs in openSUSE 12.3. No hassles. It is in openSUSE *13.1* that I am having problems. I have everything-packman installed - every conceivable codec and lib-this and lib-that and lib-other but vlc comes up with error message that it cannot read h264 files, or similar, and that there is nothing I can do about it. (Shortly I will zapp vlc from my installation and try and re-install it. I am also terrified that I do something stupid and accept the upgrades/updates which are available for 12.3 as I do not want to lose the ability to view Bd discs using 12.3. yes, and I wonder if dealers want to sell BD disks, given with the system (if I understand) *old desktop Bd readers* cannot read new BD video disks! do they think BD do not have enought problems with VOD? No, Blu-ray DVD use AACS DRM but then, in 2012, another 'layer' was added called BD+ after AACS was 'cracked'. BD+ requires your player to have access to the internet (I think) to be able to read a database containing the BD+ code applicable to the Bd disc you are trying to play. may be you added yourself via videolan (or OBS). What I mean is that there is no more videolan repo in the community repos of YaST / Repositories I remember having problems with this repo in the past. Now I try to use only packman (when possible) when you don't have packman, several apps (I don't know which) are only place holders, not really usable jdd -- http://www.dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
