[opensuse] DVD as zypper dup source
I saw a discussion of this, but missed the answer. If I want to use a local DVD to update from openSUSE 11.1 to 11.2, I can simply add the DVD as the only repo source, right? This will make available the packages in repo-oss and repo-non-oss, but not repo-update, right? I looked for this on http://en.opensuse.org/Upgrade/11.2, but there was no mention of the local DVD source method. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. If you only use the DVD source you will face the issue with the kernel-{default,pae} package as described at http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs_11.2 Bug #551642 : When updating a 11.1 from the DVD, kernel-pae-base (or kernel-default-base) is not removed. zypper dup from the online repository works ok. Workaround: Deselect kernel-pae-base manually (In the Update Overview, click Packages, go to the Installation Overview tab, select Show packages with status [X] Keep, scroll down to kernel-pae-base and deselect it). In any case I would add the online http openSUSE 11.2 source - http, cause only then you use the MirrorBrain infrastructure - with a lower priority if possible. Cause then it is more likely that all your 11.1 packages get upgraded as some might not be part of the DVD. Plus the update/11.2/ repo with the highest priority to ensure all available fixes get included too. source priority http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.2/ 20 DVD 100 http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.2/repo/oss/ 120 All as long as you have network access while the upgrade. I did all this. Used the DVD as the OSS source, and added the network sources for non-oss and updates. The install went swimmingly. The same cannot be said for after the reboot: 1) A file called libvolume_id.so.1 seems not to have been installed. So, no disks could be mounted. At all. Luckily, I ran the 11.2 repair off the DVD, and it found that two packages were not installed, I let it do so, and these and 20 or 30 dependent packages were installed. Then the system boot ok. I apologize that I cannot find the names of the two errant packages. I wrote them down on Friday. Here I sit on Monday, and I cannot find the paper. If it turns up, I will report which they were. 2) The update changed the ATI radeonhd driver to a new version (1.2.4 -> 1.3.0). This was not good! The system froze all the time. Luckily, I found out why in the openSUSE forum. I updated the radeonhd driver and all is ok. That should really be in the 11.2 update directory so it is picked up during install! Now I need to see whi Xorg is taking 20% CPU time when there is little activity. I suspect I need to disable some things the ATI driver is up to. 3) The postfix setup was messed up. Existing .db files were deleted and not remade. It took a wile to see that this is why smtp connections were refused. A few postmap commands later and all worked again. 4) And, the vmware upgrade, which is not really an openSUSE issue. But it was part of my upgrade experience. I did a similar update from a 11.2 beta to the final release, and that went much better. I can say that the repair feature was really great to have. Without it I would have had to do a new install. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O.
