Hi all, having a strange problem with my keyboard. It suddenly stopped working. When the x server is running, i cannot type at all. if i open a terminal, and issue control alt delete the computer will shut down, so i kknow the keyboard is working. Also, when booting, i can select in the boot menu what i want. i can switch to another terminal control alt f1, and so on, and the keyboard works fine, but not in the x server. how would this suddenly change on its own? and how would i fix it? i really dont want to re install i just finally got my tv card working after messing around with settings for weeks! thanks for any help. steve Peace Steve Reilly --------------------------------- Stay in the know. Your cat has probably pressed the Scroll Lock key for you .... very frustrating... Try opening a terminal konsole in X, click the open konsole window, press the Scroll Lock button on your keyboard, and then try typing.... Let me know. -- Kind regards, M Harris <>< harrismh777@earthlink.net

It could be the cats fault. I have to clean my KB yearly because of them. Carefully remove your keys minding the order and clean out with q-tips and either simple green or alcohol. The problem I have is intermittency when the KB gets dirty. BTW test the KB while in mode 3 without the X server use something simple like mc to test it. Then run startx. If it works then likely its a config error. -- ___ _ _ _ ____ _ _ _ | | | | [__ | | | |___ |_|_| ___] | \/

My first feeling is that the X server is locking up. Perhaps try to either restart the X server or check the keyboard is configured
Hi Steve, I've added what I think might fix your problem below but please investigate changing your chracter/word line wrap figure. Mine is set at 72 and I have not had any complaints and the list recipients do not end up with very long sentences that they need to scroll through to read. Steve Reilly wrote: properly. I realise you said all WAS ok and it JUST stopped working but it is possible there was a configuration change which nailed your keyboard config requiring you to redo it. You can check your keyboard configuration settings under yast when in a terminal by entering yast after you have logged in as root. Look under YAST under hardware I think. You can restart the X server by: 1) When you are presented with the locked up GUI, try a CTRL-ALT-Backspace to restart the X server so you can use a GUI logon. 2) Restart the X server by using init ie From a terminal and as root issue init 3. When it is complete issue init 5 from the terminal. If you are not presented with a GUI logon use Alt-F7 to view the X logon.
