The java-1_5_0 packages have a dependency on update-alternatives. Looks like this is missing for the 1.4.2 ones. Cheers, Andreas

No, it is just implicit via /usr/sbin/update-alternatives. This is how RPM works. If it had been missing, the message wouldn't have been appeard. Robert -- Robert Schiele Tel.: +49-621-181-2214 Dipl.-Wirtsch.informatiker mailto:rschiele@uni-mannheim.de

both, 1.5.0 and 1.4.2 require "update-alternatives", but since I had to download it seperately, rpm couldnt resolve the requirement to noarch/upd.....rpm it's installed now, but how can I get firefox working with jre (1.4.2/1.50 whatever)? thanks to all, Mike

The Java plugin for Firefox is a seperate rpm, in this case java-1_4_2-sun-plugin-1.4.2.06-5.i586.rpm SUSE splitted Java into different rpms.
I solved the prob by using the j2re_1_4_2_09 rpm directly from sun...
The easiest is usually to use YaST: Start YaST and open the Software/Installation Source module. Add a FTP source Server: ftp.gwdg.de (better use a mirror in your vicinity) Dir on server: pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-OSS-current/inst-source-java After this is done, just start YaST's Software Management, search for Java, and install what you want/need. Dependencies are then handled automatically (for example you won't encounter a missing update-alternatives). BTW, would it make sense to have such an installation source already in place, maybe deactivated by default? Cheers, Andreas

well, I'd definitely vote for it :) right now, it's hard to get opensuse up and running, because there are many "special cases", IMHO not well documented either... why not put java+plugins directly into the iso? the same for libmad, because with a bare iso install, it's not even possible to use xmms... just my 2 cents, Mike

BTW, I just added a small HOWTO to install Sun's Java to the wiki. See http://opensuse.org/index.php/Installing_Sun%27s_Java_on_SUSE_Linux I hope there are not too many errors. ;-) Cheers, Andreas
