[SLE] Polling serial ports ttyS2 and ttyS3
Hallo, I am new to Linux (I have SuSE Linux 6.3) and one of my problems is that I can't get it to look beyond ttyS1, while my internal modem is on ttyS3. It scans ttyS0 and ttyS1 and that's as far as it is looking. Another related problem is that I have now discovered that my modem is a dreaded 'winmodem', so I shall have to replace it. Are there any lists of known good internal PCI modems please? Thanks in advance Richard -- /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ Richard Smith richard@risctex.demon.co.uk Acorn StrongARM Risc PC http://www.risctex.demon.co.uk /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

My serial ports are on ttyS2/3 nothing exists in S0/1. SuSE sees these perfectly okay. As you have mentioned the dreaded Winmodem, no linux distro, atm, will see these anyway so as far as Linux is concerned, ttyS3 doesn't exist in your system. Once you change to a normal PCI internal modem, then you won't have any problems. Be careful, as far as I know there are only very few PCI modems available that are *not* Winmodems! I don't know which model/brand. As most others suggest as well: Buy an external modem for your Linux box. That should reduce headaches. That is true, but there are some good PCI modems around which are not Winmodems. True not a lot of them, but it is only time before the modem makers wake upto the fact that they are losing a lot of business ignoring the Linux community. PLEASE do yourself a favor and buy an external modem. Saves a LOT of trouble. Rogier Richard Smith wrote:

Hi Rogier! Why, my internal USR works well with no problems at at all. In fact it has worked well for the last 3 years and wilst it continues to do so, I will remain with it. A few people keep saying that internal modems are trouble but without saying why. Surely you should qualify a comment like this. Sean On Thu, 27 Jan 2000, Rogier Maas wrote:

Kewl.
Must keep an eye out for one over here then. Would be interesting to see if it makes it across the water. I would go with Rogier and say get an external modem. Of course, if you've got your heart set on an internal modem, then an ISA one is the best option. Again, you may not have any ISA slots, in which case a PCI modem is the only choice. There are a *few* 'real' PCI modems around, but not very many. The best place to go to get a list of compatible modems is to visit: http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html But definitely take heed of Rogier's advice - if at all possible get an external modem. Hi Richard, have a look into /sbin/init.d/rc.serial. I remember editing some of the below lines. But the look of the file has changed; I can't tell what the script does in the first lines. It might be well save to try the following hint further below in the script: # These are the standard COM1 through COM4 devices # # If you have an internal modeme with a Rockwell Chipset, add a "skip_test" # to the /dev/ttyS3 line below. (It's not added by default because it will # screw up people with 8514 displays). # # run_setserial /dev/ttyS0 ${AUTO_IRQ} skip_test autoconfig # run_setserial /dev/ttyS1 ${AUTO_IRQ} skip_test autoconfig # run_setserial /dev/ttyS2 ${AUTO_IRQ} skip_test autoconfig # run_setserial /dev/ttyS3 ${AUTO_IRQ} autoconfig Juergen

I'm fairly sure I tried this with no effect, much to my surprise as it looked like the answer to the problem. I say 'I'm fairly sure' because I've tried many, many things in the last few days and I'm into linux-info-overload ATM! I'll have another go tomorrow. I know my internal modem won't work as it is a winmodem, but this wouldn't stop linux from polling the port, would it? Surely it would poll the port (or would if I could make it!) and then come back with a failure message of some kind...wouldn't it...? As I said before, I don't have an internal modem, so this is a (reasonably) educated guess. As far as I am aware, a WinModem is a WinModem because it doesn't actually *have* a serial controller chip, so there isn't actually a serial port there to *be* polled. The kernel bootup messages only show the serial ports detected, not the ones that weren't detected. If I were you, I'd give up trying to do anything with the WinModem and get another one and figure it out then. I know someone will correct me if I'm wrong...
