I believe that is exactly the SUSE plan. With 10.0 and 10.1 they've already cut way back on the SUSE-specific patches.
And a big WOOHOO! for that... For those who use SuSE -- not SLES -- in a business/mission-critical context, the more standard the kernel gets, the happier we are... Definitely a move in the right direction.
