I'm not an expert of grub, but I know how it works. I tried every option and command I know in the grub commandline, no success.
from the boot menu? when you are on the very first menu, press ESC, then "e" and go to the editor? usually one can type "kernel (" then press TAB to see what drives are seen then complete to the desired disk and kernel using tab completion after that initrd ( and same to the initrd desired then b to boot if this don't boot, try an other disk. is succeed, you have found what drive is seen by GRUB with what name jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.org http://news.opensuse.org/2009/04/13/people-of-opensuse-jean-daniel-dodin/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, I'm familiar with Grub commands. The problem is that if the system is installed on hd0 and grub(actually the boot sector) installed on hd1's MBR, it could not find the root partition. Don't know how grub decides which drive is hd0 and the other is hd0. It seems depends on which drive was the boot device(the one selected by pressing F12 on my case). I get a hint after many failures. When I install grub into sdb from the linux system, sdb is seen as hd1. Then I boot from sdb, it becomes hd0. Not quite sure about this, just a guess. After about half a month's mess, I get used to it. Just press a couple of keys on startup, no big deal.
