[opensuse] installation from an downloaded iso image
I know that it is possible to use a downloaded iso file to install opensuse without burning it to a DVD. I was asked by a Window user who is planning to change his OS if it would be possible to do this from a Window environment. Has somebody experience in this respect. The computer has no DVD or CD rom and the USB port is not working right now. Internet connection is okay. -- Linux User 183145 using LXDE and KDE4 on a Pentium IV , powered by openSUSE 11.4 (i586) Kernel: 3.1.0-rc7-1-desktop LXDE WM & KDE Development Platform: 4.7.1 (4.7.1) 22:00pm up 1:16, 3 users, load average: 1.79, 1.40, 1.39 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You can probably copy it to a USB flash drive. Alternatively, boot from a NET iso, then use the downloaded DVD as an installation via http or NFS.

Then there is only booting with PXE, but that requires a suitable environment. (dhcp+tftp). -- Per Jessen, Zürich (18.0°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, it's possible if you get a GRUB to load. I've described it previously on this list. The problem is, I start with a GRUB in the MBR. I don't know how you can create a GRUB-Image (Bootsector) under Windows and get that loaded by the Win-Bootloader (usual descriptions have you install GRUB into the /-Partition, copy the Grub with dd and put that image into the Windows-Boot-Dir. You could try using the *.exe in the Image or try to boot the isolinux stuff from boot/x86_64/loader with the Windows-Bootloader. -dnh -- Computers make very fast, very accurate mistakes. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ubuntu does this via wubi. I have read somewhere that someone will adjust wubi for opensuse, although I cannot remember specifics at the moment. There is also the alternative option of PXE boot. You'll need a dhcp, tftp and http server for this. If you need more details, feel free to ask.
