Hi all, Trying to get the new Gimp compiled, but seem to be running into some road blocks. One of the reasons I'm doing it is because it seems that SuSE has disabled the preview feature in the file browser. Not sure why yet, but from what I can tell that seems to be the reason it's not working on the 2.0.4 version included with 9.2! Now a couple of questions for you guys. Has someone successfully compiled the new version yet? Are there rpms available for SuSE 9.2 lying around somewhere? In my attempts to compile, I'm getting some odd errors on files that are installed. Now I'm not sure if Gimp requires newer GTK/2 files or not to build. I'm still working with the 9.2 installed files, so I'm suspecting newer 2.8 stuff might be needed to get the compile to work? Thoughts, suggestions? thanks, Lee -- --- KMail v1.7.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 "Don't let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game!"

Thanks Patrick, I had found those earlier, but wasn't sure of the builder, so hesitated on installing them. I'll give them a look though. Yep, everyone local has still got the preview in all their 2.x versions. Don't know why SuSE chose to disable the feature. regards, Lee -- --- KMail v1.7.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 "Don't let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game!"

SuSE didn't do it. It was a foopah by the developers, reported on the gimp-dev list. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos

Ok, something I missed then, thank's for pointing that out, so I don't go around blaming SuSE. ;o) I still can't get the bloody thing to compile. See if one of you guys can help with this. Actually neither ;) With SuSE 1.11.1 packages on 9.1, GIMP wouldn't build, with my 1.11.1 packages it would. Go figure. -- James Ogley james@usr-local-bin.org GNOME for SuSE: http://usr-local-bin.org/rpms

Thanks James, that was what my suspicions were as well. I'll try another compile of those files or get yours and see how the gimp compile goes then. Ok, guys, good news, Gimp compiles! After changing the libgfs files, everything fell into place and all worked nicely. Seems there are some bugs in the last SuSE update of the files (1.11.1) which prevents or causes the errors noted in the compile failure. Gimp 2.2.2 is installed and working a treat! I have rpms for x86_64, but you can grab the src.rpm and rebuild from http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-jmorris/ the gimp-help src.rpm as well, as it has been updated for 2.2.2.
I'm still working with the 9.2 installed files, so I'm suspecting newer 2.8 stuff might be needed to get the compile to work? I don't believe so. HTH. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

I compiled it on 9.0. It went pretty clean, but I've upgraded gtk and related libs also. IIRC, I had to get a new freetype to get it to compile.

The release notes give GTK+ 2.2.4, which isn't terribly new.
Thoughts, suggestions?
thanks, Lee
It's critical to compile the gtk related stuff in the correct order. You can find that at the gnome release notes page (somewhere on www.gnome.org). Jim

Thanks everyone, I think I have it now. The rpms that Patrick suggested worked good and the preview is back with this one. I've also downloaded the src.rpm from Joe's place and will compile that as well to be sure I'm not missing something to build it. And thanks Jim for the update on what it needs. I'm sure the freetype/2 are good for it and have noticed others having trouble compiling before updating those. Again, many thanks, I'll be gimping now. ;o) Lee -- --- KMail v1.7.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 "Don't let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game!"
